The term serpent or snake in this case is simply the personification of the root word from which they are taken. Therefore, the serpent (Strong's H5175) is the one who practices H5172. Mystery solved.

What happened was God's plan. Adam, Eve, and Satan were players but had little control of what happened. God cast himself as Adam, Lucifer was cast as Eve, sin was personified by the Serpent. It was the beginning of the restitution of all things, which would be rehearsed in one way or another by all the prophets.

Sin gets us into heaven as it, --- as the hymn says, Adams sin is a happy fault and necessary to God's plan.

Both Adam and Eve went on to live righteous lives and have gained their salvation in the kingdom of heaven. Yes, they brought mortality into the world and gave us the chance to experience good and evil and to become more like God and Jesus Christ. I would be surprised if most of us ever make it as far as father Adam and mother Eve.
