Today the Church celebrates the feast of St. Dymphna, a seventh-century Irish princess and the patroness of people with mental afflictions.
St. Dymphna took a vow of chastity as a young woman. When her own father, who was deeply unstable after the death of his wife, sought Dymphna, she refused and fled to Belgium, but he eventually found her and killed her. The town where she was martyred soon became a site of pilgrimage and a place of refuge for those suffering from mental illness.
