There were some minor WMD experiments funded, supplied, and supported by the US, so Iraq could defend against Iran.
There was never any significant WMD threat from Iraq that warranted the illegal invasion.
I say "illegal" for many reasons, but the whole point of "Shock and Awe" was a war crime because it deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure.

Point being that no one has really achieved a true democratic republic yet, and we still have vestiges of monarchies and theocracies in our system.
