We could have done it and there was nothing the Soviets could or would have done. Of course, Ike/Kennedy didn't necessarily know at that time that Fidel Castro was a total despot and a mass murderer.

I remember how Reagan reacted when Grenada went communist. That regime only lasted a few days, thanks to Reagan. Had Jimmy Carter been in office, Grenada would likely be a communist, totalitarian, island.
