There are those who fall on one side or the other of the dichotomy of Freedom vis a vis Security.

[Sometimes the contrast is funny. For example those who want the freedom to carry a gun everywhere since they feel insecure without one, but I digress.]

This dichotomy is what divides our nation, which is the most free of any nation in civilized history. And it exposes the hypocrisy of those who demand their freedom, but are willing to restrict the freedom of others.

Therein is the quandary faced by government policy makers:
do we protect the many at the expense of the few, or protect the few and put the many at risk?

This is starting to be a problem I think as it draws more and more attention to the OTHER members of the board.

The way I see it some "Deep Pockets" lawyer will go after somebody with money NOT the damn criminal and two, The federal government COULD apply new restrictions to server owners that are passed down to site members in the form of new rules. It would NOT be the first time OR the first country.

Current site rules are pretty much left up the state or country the server is in. Criminal laws are pretty much regulated FROM the state the poster is in. I found this out recently when something I posted in Finland was ruled illegal but the state I posted it FROM it was NOT illegal. Thus no charge. However I am still banned from Finland.

The other sites name will appear in the story of the Yahoo link I post just like ours did. That site does NOT have the reputation as a "hate" site. Its reputation IS based on being just about one of the best hack sites going. I think Obama and the democrats will use this to restrict content/speech on the net. Might be six months might be a year but I DO think its coming.

The sociopathy of issues such as drug addiction, spree killers, child abuse and terrorism requires government effort at three levels. First is suppression of the crime, second is rehabilitation of the criminal and third is amelioration of the socio-economic roots of the problems. This a big job and it is is the government's job.

The incidence of these sociopathies is not at all uniform in Western societies or around the world. The multi-variate analysis to correlate social factors with social dysfunction is an on-going task in sociology and political science. As of yet there is no unified field theory to explain these matters.

It is worth noting that by any measure, the USA is unique among its peer nations in high rates of drug addiction, gun violence and incarceration. Our rank in child pornography is harder to get data for and our domestic terrorism problems are substantially lower than many of our peer nations.

The relevant fact in the issue of government size is that every nation on the planet has experienced a steady, occasionally spectacular, rise in the size of government as measured in terms of government workers and as a percentage of GDP. This fact is dominating and irrefutable. There is no mystery about the driver of world-wide expansion of government: a cascade of technological revolutions has transfigured human society, creating unprecedented challenges and very new solutions to the problems.

Government has the only potential solutions for these problems. The idea that the "free market" can cure drug addiction, gun violence, sexual exploitation or terrorism is absurd.

I agree with the first two points, however, I am not conviced it is the government's job to "solve" the socio-economic roots of most, if not all, issues. It is my contention that the government's "job" ends with creating, or fostering, and environment where free people can work to solve these problems, independent of government.
