You folks will never understand Trump's negotiating method. Because most politicians never negotiate that way. It's how it's done by business men and women, people who have to produce to succeed.
By making his claim of ending the war in 24 hours, Trump disses Zelensky by implying that he can force him to settle with Russia that quickly, or even scare him into settling before Trump takes office.
Now . . . if Zelensky holds out and doesn't settle with Russia until a week after Trump takes office, Zelensky can claim to have shown up the Big Orange Amerikanez and save face. Trump gets what he wants, which is to stop shipping so much money and equipment to Zelensky and be able to use that money to build a big beautiful wall.
If Zelensky isn't crazy, saving face is all he wants at this point, along with keeping enough of Ukraine to be able to hold his head up at the next World Conference of Dictators meeting.
Trump is an appallingly weak negotiator.
No, people in business don’t strut and bluster ineffectively. Trump does. And he usually winds up giving away the store.
He always follows the same pattern.
First, he makes an outlandish and ridiculous claim in public. Which only serves to make him look ridiculous.
Then he doubles down on it, regardless of what the other side does, which drives Trump further into his own corner.
When discussions do start, Trump hops around and refuses to set terms or negotiate in good faith. This usually involves leading participants to think they have a deal, only to have Trump throw the deal over a make new demands.
At this point, Trump’s deal either falls apart, or negotiations resume in a poisoned atmosphere of distrust, since Trump has already demonstrated that he will not conduct himself in good faith.
If a deal seems clear, Trump starts trying to take all sides in public (which is a reflection of his pathological need to win every time),
At this point, the deal usually falls apart, or Trump winds up settling for less, or on;y pyrric victories.
For Trump a pyrric victory, is good enough. Appearances always counted for far more than reality in Trump’s mind.
He knows his political base will cheer, no matter what.
Trump is now between his long time Kremlin benefactors, who won’t settle for anything less than the conquest of Ukraine, and Ukraine, which will settle for nothing less than Russia’s defeat.
Trump is not an honest broker here. His dependence on Russian money and his kowtowing to the people who lent it to him, make him a dishonest broker.
His consistent kowtowing to Putin and his support for the Russian invasion also render him dishonest as a broker as well
Zelinsky knows all of this. His experience with the clown Prince give him no reason to trust Trump or believe any commitment he may make.
And the Russians are now publicly demanding that trump do their bidding.
Of course, if a weak man like Trump allows himself to be bullied by Putin into pushing Moscow’s agenda, and play the modern day Neville Chamberlain, his American base will cheer him as a great diplomat and peacemaker. Thevnoid]se machine is already setting thst table.
The independence of Ukraine, and America’s role as leader of the western alliance hang in the balance.
