Sadly, the Ukrainian people elected the idiot Zelensky and now they are paying the price.
#1. Zelensky over-estimated the Western nations support
#2. He misread Ukraine's importance to the West
#3. He misread Putin's intent to invade.
The western nations were never serious about protecting Ukraine or letting them join NATO
Ukraine was seen as expendable, and the West was just using Zelensky as a tool to irritate Putin.

The only importance Ukraine has is to the US politicians who peddle influence and launder money there.

Without a doubt.
However, the overbearing trend since the end of WW2 has been globalization.
There would have to be major systemic changes for those things to happen.
Possible, but not likely without major internal revolutions.
