KAUKAUNA — As changes to collective bargaining powers for public workers take effect today, the Kaukauna Area School District is poised to swing from a projected $400,000 budget shortfall next year to a $1.5 million surplus due to health care and retirement savings.

The Kaukauna School Board approved changes Monday to its employee handbook that require staff to cover 12.6 percent of their health insurance and to contribute 5.8 percent of their wages to the state’s pension system, in accordance with the new collective bargaining law, commonly known as Act 10.

These are part time staffers and teacher assistants. Nice try though.
The guy at the top of the list (Hessler) was one of my PE teachers. Two other teachers I had retired last year. One was my sociology teacher. She was there 34 years. She was at $167,500. The other I had for history and was the football coach. He became the principal. He made over $180,000.
There is one on the list "Christa Bischoff, who was substitute teacher. I had her as a sub when I was in 4th grade. She also subbed when I was in High School as well. Very nice woman.
The bottom line is full time teachers in NJ are very well paid and have fantastic benefits.
They are also covered by the the powerful NJEA. All NJ teachers once they reach three years full time experience get tenure. Which means they cannot be fired for poor performance.

For the most part this is right. But I think it's more like 20% teacher's responsibility, 30% society's responsibility, and 50% the parent's responsibility. But, this thread isn't about placing blame (even if some people want to make this a referendum on teacher performance).

Honestly though, is making teachers pay a little towards their retirement and healthcare (like the rest of us working stiffs) really so horrible? They weren't dropped to minimum wage with no benefits. But some of you are flying off the deep end over what amounts to very little.

Saying that "some people are making this a referendum on teacher performance" is like saying Joplin, MO got a little breese.

And if you recall the public unions had already agreed to pay more. It was the loss of bargaining rights that created the fight between them and the Koch brothers (oops, I meant Walker).

The NJ Teacher's union is trying the pull the same shit. Their contribution percentage was raised and now they want a wage increase to make up the difference. HUH?!!!
The whole point of increasing the contribution was to curtail costs to the taxpayers.

If these workers and their unions had an ounce on integrity, they'd issue a statement to the press that said: "Yes we understand people are struggling due to the poor economy. We also realize that revenues which fund our wages and benefits are down. Therefore we propose to forgo our wage increases for two years. We also agree to increase our contributions to our benefits. We agree to do this for the taxpayers of New Jersey. These are the people we serve"...That would have been the decent thing to do.

These are part time staffers and teacher assistants. Nice try though.
The guy at the top of the list (Hessler) was one of my PE teachers. Two other teachers I had retired last year. One was my sociology teacher. She was there 34 years. She was at $167,500. The other I had for history and was the football coach. He became the principal. He made over $180,000.
There is one on the list "Christa Bischoff, who was substitute teacher. I had her as a sub when I was in 4th grade. She also subbed when I was in High School as well. Very nice woman.
The bottom line is full time teachers in NJ are very well paid and have fantastic benefits.
They are also covered by the the powerful NJEA. All NJ teachers once they reach three years full time experience get tenure. Which means they cannot be fired for poor performance.

You chose your extremes and I chose mine. Nice try.

Real working men and women didn't vote for Walker to get the states finances in order?
None of the working men and women think state employees should pay more for their healthcare and retirement?
Real working men and women aren't tired of paying ever increasing taxes to pay ever inflated salaries of public employees?

Not as much as you think and according to polls. Because WE working men and women know that they are working men and women too. And we sure as hell wouldn't want the same done to us.

Yes, Koch (oops, I meant Walker) was voted in. But he was at least bright enough to not say what he was going to do once elected. Now he's up to his ass in alligators.

look a here hoss..I am in a public sector union, the UC demanded 5% pension contribution and 5% medical. they got 2% now and 5 in 3 years, the medical was halved for the same period.

HOWEVER , at the same time, they agreed to a 4.5% pay increase for 5 years, each year.........

see how that works? its BULLSHIT and I am a member, and I know its bullshit.

I'm a unionized public sector employee too, HOSS. It's called negotiation.

I also sat on the other side of the table as a locally elected official. We hammered out a good deal for the employees AND the public.
