HOWEVER , at the same time, they agreed to a 4.5% pay increase for 5 years, each year.........

Yup. I am a member of the IBEW in a public utility power plant. And yes I did serve on the county board for over 10 years. As the vice-chair I was on the county negotiating team and as a union steward I also was part of our union negotiating team.
So what's your problem? Keep your smells to yourself.

The guy at the top of the list (Hessler) was one of my PE teachers. Two other teachers I had retired last year. One was my sociology teacher. She was there 34 years. She was at $167,500. The other I had for history and was the football coach. He became the principal. He made over $180,000.
There is one on the list "Christa Bischoff, who was substitute teacher. I had her as a sub when I was in 4th grade. She also subbed when I was in High School as well. Very nice woman.
The bottom line is full time teachers in NJ are very well paid and have fantastic benefits.
They are also covered by the the powerful NJEA. All NJ teachers once they reach three years full time experience get tenure. Which means they cannot be fired for poor performance.
You chose your extremes and I chose mine. Nice try.

These things are no longer sustainable. The taxpayers have HAD IT up to here. We're done being raked over the coals by every fucking public worker union thug that sticks his hand out. Enough.

And you didn't check my link either. You probably don't realize that PROPERTY taxes make up a lot of what teachers get paid. If you live in a high dollar area you get paid high dollar wages. But for you to say that represents the norm is really, really stupid, even for you. Get your head out of your ass and attend a school board meeting. I can't spend my whole evening educating you.
I'm a taxpayer who realizes that if I want my garbage hauled off, my roads fixed, my bridges repaired, my kids taught and prisoners arrested and locked up then I have to pay for those things. They are hard working men and women who deserve a decent wage and benefits and regular wage increases to keep up with the cost of living.
I don't sit around and whine about what I have to pay my friends and neighbors who fill those jobs.

If it's any of your business.....With the recent sale of my plant we now sell our electricity on the open market. But the end user is a public consumer that has no choice but to pay whatever the costs are. So my union is not public in the traditional sense but we worked for a public owned utility.

If you want to increase test scores, then make it easier to fire lousy teachers with tenure and find some magic way of getting more of the loser parents to care about their kids education...

Test scores towards what, No Child Left Behind? Big freakin' deal. And besides, Parents have more of a role in their child's education than the teachers do. As far as teacher retention goes, if they quit because they have to pay a little bit towards their own retirement and health care, then fuck 'em. They obviously didn't care enough about the students to be an effective teacher in the first place.
