Why people vote Republican

Many of them are simply confused.

"Finally, Cornell University’s Suzanne Mettler points out that many beneficiaries of government programs seem confused about their own place in the system. She tells us that 44 percent of Social Security recipients, 43 percent of those receiving unemployment benefits, and 40 percent of those on Medicare say that they “have not used a government program.”

Social Security, Unemployment Insurance and Medicare are all paid into by the recipients. Welfare and Food Stamps are not. That is what those people meant. I don't care what kind of dickweed propaganda you want to try and make out of it.

I also want to see where she got these supposed statistics. They look made up to me.

Everyone receiving these benefits, they aren't benefits they are payments made on money received, can just be paid back all the money taken from them, with interest. Then everyone is happy.

Liberals believe that when government takes money from you they have a right to do that. When they give it back, it's a government benefit to which you aren't entitled.

Sort of like they way they think tax cuts work.

Ms Mettler seems confused about the electoral system in the US. She is right about one thing. Most convoluted big government schemes are democrat party inventions. She also seems to think that Americans who are forced to pay into Social security all their lives owe some sort of allegiance to democrats. I would be content if the federal government gave me back a lump sum of the money I was forced to contribute to Social Security during my working life with a moderate interest rate but there is no money left in the system. That's why I don't consider Social Security to be a government benefit.

There are two reasons to vote Republican:

1) Because one is rich.
2) Because one has been deceived.

All Republican voters fall into one of those two categories.

and of course Democratic voters are not being deceived...right?.....

NOPE! Keep voting Pub and waiting for small gov't, abortion reform, humble diplomacy, relief for the non rich, idiot dittohead dupe.

Pubs are not for deregulation, messing with birth control, polluting, screwing the workers, cutting Medicare/aid/SS? You're a gd moron. Read the sig, you're being distract by BULLSHYTTE from their SCREWING YOU. DUH.

What do you mean by "pubs"? Do you ever plan to grow up and communicate like a big boy?

I haven't seen where the republicans were cutting those programs. But there does need to be cuts, because we are in huge debt and the economy will not get better until cuts are made. Its what they make the cuts on....the things that are not a necessity are what have to be cut, but they seem to cut things that shouldn't be cut and other things could be cut.

A. The Pubs WANT to cut them, the lying hypocrites. Jeebus, have a memory fcs.- Dems aren't going to let them thank god.

B. Cuts HAVE been made (500k federal workers), and the economy IS growing (no more BS debt ceiling crises please!!). Economists agree the debt problem is nowhere near as bad as Rush/Beck/Fox/Pubs rant about...

he said and i Quote....."Rank and file Republicans want to pay higher taxes"....i dont know ANYONE of any Party that wants to pay higher taxes...

Yet you vote for the policy that will either lead to rising taxes on middle class and the poor (aka "broadening the tax base"), or to dismantling the entitlement programs (like Paul Ryan plan for replacing Medicare with vouchers).

i dont vote for none of that Bullshit ....who the fuck are you?....you dont know anyone here but you know what everyone votes?....yet another one of the psychics checks in...

It couldn't have anything to do with violent disgust with liberal 'ethics', goals and agendas, could it? noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo....

The economy does not work like a household or a business, it is a closed system. If everyone tries to reduce his debt, the economy tanks and it makes everyone's debt problems worse. That is why the government has to keep up its spending when everyone else tries to save.

Republicans were not able to cut the entitlement programs yet because Americans overwhelmingly support them. But God knows they've been trying hard. In parallel they using the "starve the beast" strategy -- cut taxes so the deficit explodes and then bully the Democrats into supporting the cuts.

On point where do you get your information?

For example:

"Currently, employers pay federal unemployment taxes of 6.2 percent on the first $7,000 earned by each of their employees during a calendar year. These federal taxes are used to cover the costs of administering the UC programs in all states. In addition, the federal UC taxes pay one-half of the cost of extended unemployment benefits (during periods of high unemployment) and provide for a fund from which states may borrow, if necessary, to pay benefits."

Payroll taxes are shared by employer and employee.

Unlike neo-cons who think that we can fight two wars and cut taxes on the rich without adding one cent to the deficit. What do they think, wars are fought for free?

And you're wrong about us thinking people aren't "entitled" to something they've paid into their whole lives. That's why they're called ENTITLEMENTS and you're damn right that people are ENTITLED to receive SS and Medicare.

Politicians can fuck with SS and Medicare only at their own peril. They will be called "one termers".

That's what I call them in my book, and they deserve no more. And you sir are a Pub dupe LOL. Try to add something to the discussion, troll.

Perfect. You nailed it right on the dot. Its sad too since as a Federal Republic the design is such to invest in self, draw on self. The system has worked quite well, and in these inflationary times, seems to continue to do so. It is frustrating from the liberal view that somehow entitlements are a must and free and giveaways, rather than paid for and dispensed.

Good post by you. Hat is tipped.

"The system has worked quite well"????? Try and explain that to people who were forced to go to poor farms. You don't know history very well, do you?

"the liberal view that somehow entitlements are a must and free and giveaways, rather than paid for and dispensed"????? Who said they're free and giveaways? I'll be waiting for a link or direct quote. Absent that you are a liar.

Everyone can save for retirement on their own, you don't need a government for that. However, SS is a much better design. It works more like an insurance -- keeps the premiums low by collecting from a large pool of clients, but allows some of them to receive a bigger payoff than they have contributed.

As for whether you can call it a benefit, and whether one can feel entitled to it -- nobody gives a damn. This is a useful program and it is overwhelmingly supported by Americans.
