You do realize it's much harder to make a semiautomatic (one round per trigger pull) operate properly than it is to make an automatic (keeps firing while trigger is pulled) operate properly?

Not really. A fully automatic firearm does not necessarily do more damage. It generally means a lot more misses.

Fully automatic "machine guns" are really meant for suppression fire. That is, to keep the bad guys from shooting at your guys while they're moving into position. When a soldier, or a SWAT guy, go to actually shoot someone, they don't choose fully automatic. Selecting semiautomatic fire is the way to do maximum damage when actually trying to kill someone, because you're going to aim precisely. With full auto, you'll just run out of ammo quicker without killing more bad guys.

In practice, that usually the way it works.

And given time he very well could have acquired one, or modified one of the guns his mom had. But upon making the decision to kill people he wasn't about to stop and spend the time and effort necessary to find and acquire a fully automatic weapon.

Again, the military will select semi auto fire when actually shooting at a bad guy. They choose fully automatic to lay down suppression fire, which doesn't tend to actually hit anyone, it just keeps the bad guys from shooting back when our guys move into position.

Well why do you think he chose that when something more damaging would have killed more people? Seems like he wanted to kill as many as possible. Grenades perhaps would have been a good option.
