FDR was a great war leader but everything he did as POTUS extended the Great Depression.

The only thing that stopped it was WWII.

Matthew isn't concerned but with one thing. He likes FDR because he started down he path of big government social welfare programs and Matthew expects the government to take care of his lazy ass because he refuses to do it himself.

None of the above, The best was Calvin Coolidge, silent Cal got the country out of a sharp, deep recession and into the roaring twenties, first President to come out for civil rights for African-Americans, granted citizenship to Native Americans and was wise enough to stay the hell out of the way of the lives of American Citizens and keep us out of foreign conflicts.

Well need another President like him. :)

Yup. Coolidge was great and its to bad more Presidents don't follow his lead.

I still think Lincoln was the best though. Coolidge was in his league.

Washington, Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, Lyndon Baines Johnson. Each accomplished policies that made America a stable place, not a perfect place for sure. Washington established the parameters of president and the importance of government, Lincoln recognized the dignity of all and fought for it, FDR fought both depression and a war and established a system of government that created our golden years, Johnson created healthcare and civil rights that allowed Lincoln's work to continue. President Obama, had he started earlier, when he had congress, could have done much more but the ACA is certainly a great accomplishment.

Life was good during the Roosevelt years. When he died in the spring of 1945 people wept all over this great nation......even more than when John Kennedy was assassinated. I was eleven years old and living in Oak Ridge, TN. Oak Ridge was created by FDR and his appointed general...Leslie Groves and Oak Ridge produced the fissionable uranium which made the bomb dropped on Hiroshima and contributed to the ending of the second world war. I might mention that Harry S. Truman made the decision to use that bomb.

Without even mentioning the methodical recovery from the Hoover depression FDR was greater than any two of the others combined. Maybe that's why he was elected four times.
Maybe that's why the Republicans didn't let their shirt tails hit their asses till they put a maximum two terms on the presidency.

At the same time he was doing that, the British were violently putting down revolts in their colonies, the Germans were slaughtering millions of people, Stalin was killing people left and right, the Japanese were carving swathes of death through China.

Was it bad? Yup. But give it a little perspective. We locked up 110,000 people because of public opinion, most of them were released within a year.

By comparison, the British held German POW's for YEARS after the war ended, because they were used to having them around to do schlub work.

YOu know, you might have a point here.

You are right, I want government to do things I can't do for myself.

I really can't keep all the roads I have to travel in good repair. I kind of expect government to do that.

I can't inspect every bit of food I eat to make sure that it's safe to eat, and I can't personally purify the water that I drink. I kind of expect government to do that, too.

The problem with "Libertarians" is that you guys want all the benefits of living in a civilized society without having to make any of the sacrifices to do so- paying taxes, obeying sensible laws, and so on.

That kind of makes you the "Freeloaders", doesn't it?

Because I would happily have a discussion about how we can do food stamps or section 8 better so that people aren't abusing it. Except I think the people who are abusing it are WalMart and McDonalds paying people starvation wages and then telling their employees to apply for these things.
