TRENTON -- A Trenton father was charged Tuesday with child endangerment in the death of his 9-month-old daughter who he failed to feed while he smoked marijuana, authorities said.

Javon S. Thomas, 21, faces a single count of child endangerment after investigators from the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office determined that he neglected his daughter Madison by missing several feedings, according to the criminal complaint.

Police, fire and medical responders were called to an apartment on the 1000 block of Stuyvesant Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Monday on a report of a child having difficulty breathing, Lt. Stephen Varn said.

EMS workers began CPR on Madison and took her to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where she was pronounced dead.

The child showed no external signs of abuse, according to Casey DeBlasio, spokeswoman for the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.

An autopsy is pending and the child's death is under investigation by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force, DeBlasio said.

Madison Thomas was in the care of her father while the mother was out of the apartment. It was not immediately clear how long Javon Thomas was caring for the child, DeBlasio said.

There are two other small children who live in the apartment, DeBlasio said. It was not immediately clear if those children were also at home at the time of Madison's death, she said. Those two children are now with the mother, DeBlasio said.

Thomas' bail was set at $75,000 cash or bond. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
