Whats the Minimum Wage??

Why is it necessary to know what the exact federal minimum wage is in order to have a discussion on the merits of the federal government mandating it? Does knowing that it's $7.25 somehow add to the overall discussion on the legislation behind it?
It does to the extent to note its irrelevance to the wages paid at a lot of, if not most, entry-level jobs, where it's reputed to matter.

Never heard of the 1st Amendment, have you?

So what are you suggesting then? That congress should have less power?

We need somebody to vote on whether a bill is constitutional or acceptable to be put into law. Bribing congress to get your way should be a felony. Voicing opinions is not, there's a difference.

I think you need to clarify that statement Peeps.

Are you trying to say that an absolute free market is stupid or are you saying that any and all free market principles are stupid?

An absolute free market, of course. Otherwise, I would have said "free market priniciples". The OP I was responding to was bandying about the free market "conservative" wet dream again. Sadly, free market principles aren't working very well for us either, I might add, are they?
There's as close to this "absolute free market" (at least insofar as product regulation is concerned) as you can get in black markets, like the drug trade.

I hear that there a lots an lots of peeps making way more than minimum wage peddling illicit drugs...How'd that work out with no gumbint dictating the price for labor?

You dim bulb.

We don't have free market principles in the U.S. in most markets. Big Government and its Corporatist Cronies have destroyed them.

Bullshit. Everything is skewed in favor of corporations - and they are straining against the bit to loosen "free market principles" so that they can continue to collude and suck us dry... now they get an even bigger voice in our elections. We DO have proof of the existence "free market principles" pop up here and there, and the results are usually NOT good for American consumers (see Enron's pushing for deregulation of California, costing them 30 billion and unnecessary blackouts and the shenanigans of Wall street during the housing boom - due again to deregulation, just to name two). Seriously. Are you people blind or stupid?

Good point, but not knowing the exact number shouldn't preclude one from having a reasonable discussion on the legislation and purpose of the minimum wage laws.

That congress should have less power?

Of course they should have less power. Many if not most of what the federal government does is unconstitutional right now. It is a lot harder for a lobbiests to buy off every state, county and local official to get their way than it is to bribe the feds.

Yeah, but legalize them and watch what happens. Besides, talk about a "buyer beware" market.

Whoever said corporations want free markets? They want to skew the markets to favor them and congress is a great way to do it.

Like the pharmaceuticals and health care reform? ...you made an excelent point!!! :clap2:

A minimum wage is the single most stupid thing you can do to a free market.

A free market is the single most stupid thing you can do to a civilization.

I read this 3 times, took a drink of water rubbed my eyes and read it twice more.

And it's confirmed.

This is not just the dumbest thing I have ever heard, it's the dumbest thing ever heard.:clap2:
No, saying that there is such a thing as a "free market" is the dumbest thing ever heard.

Yeah...A "buyer beware market" that delivers the goods for vastly less money and arguably safer drugs than stuff like Vioxx, Fen-phen and numerous other FDA-approved disasters.

Fan of robber barons, oligarchies, dictators and monarchs?

All of which are a the result of government intervention. The robber barons got that way by purchasing congress to grant them special favors. In a free market monopolies don't last, that takes government intervention.
You need to study up on how Rockefeller took over the Oil monopoly. He got a special favor from his fellow robber baron Vanderbuilt, not the government, on shipping his oil on Vanderbuilt's railroad.

I repeat, there is no such thing as a "free market" in the real world, never has been and never will be.

Well....ummmmm...whatever it is, its too HIGH

Michael Steele's minimum-wage blunder - The Week

In a discussion about the constitutionality of a federal minimum-wage policy on MSNBC's "The Last Word," Steele was asked to specify the amount, and laughed, saying it isn't "relevant" to the unemployed whether the minimum wage is $7 or $10. Host Lawrence O'Donnell said, "It's okay to say you don't know," eliciting more laughter from Steele.
The reaction: Michael Steele has put his foot in it before, says Evan McMorris-Santoro at Talking Points Memo, but "confessing ignorance about the federal minimum wage in the midst of a campaign where Republicans are shouting 'Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!' from every rooftop" is as bad as it gets. GOP leaders who want ordinary Americans to think you care, jot this down — the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.

But don't believe what you hear! Dem damn Libruls want you to believe Conservatives aren't behind the middle class. Lmao, This asshat doesn't even know the minimum wage.. And he's in touch with the working folk?.. Gimmie a break. He could care less about the middle class.

Are you saying that middle class workers make minimum wage?

Dang, you've outdone your normal stupidity with that crap!!!!

Street drug dealers cut their drugs with ANYTHING, no matter how harmful, to increase their profit!!!
And each "sub-contractor" down the line to the final consumer cuts it some more with anything they want, irrespective and unknowing of what the "product" has been cut with before.
BRILLIANT!!!!!!!
