Although it would be easy to do so in normal times, Republicans have made it clear that will filibuster the attempt to do so.

So Republicans obstructing normal senate function make it too political dangerous to do so.

If we put in term limits--two four year terms or three six year terms or whatever; the next human to fill the seat that is being vacated is subject to the same rules, pressures, influences--corruptive and otherwise. If you want proof of this...the same guys complaining about Schumer and McConnell were complaining about Harry Reid and Trent Lott and were likely the same guys complaining about Tip O'Neil and Sam Ervin. Monied influence will find access to the candidates and office holders as long as we don't change the rules of the game.

The fix is one that neither party wants to embrace.

• Full public funding of the elections for all federal office in the general and midterm elections. It wouldn't change the barriers to entry in the primaries but it is a start. Get rid of contributions and thus the influence. The Democratic party, Republican Party, and any other party that has shown it has broad following all get the same money to run a campaign; all the way down to the penny.
• Limit television and radio campaign advertisements to only even numbered hours on the clock from 8 AM to 8 PM; Monday through Friday. In a standard hour of network or cable television, there are something like 16 minutes of commercials that are available. This all but eliminates the ability of one side or the other to dominate the airwaves with 501-3C (aka soft money) ads. Keep the equal time laws in place as well. This will not affect any of the ads you see on the internet. But since they are driven pretty much by logarithm anyway...it won't matter much.
• Age limits for office holders at the federal level; including judgeships. Nothing against old people but if you're over 70 (or 75 if you prefer), you don't get to run again for federal office. If you're a judge, you're out on December 31 following your 70/75th birthday. The nation thanks you for your service. This has nothing to do with corruptive influences but, rather, the work day, the grind, the details of legislation. The details of court rulings. The details of court cases.

The OP asks.."what is wrong with us". Perhaps the admission that the 200+ y/o business model (the Constitution) is not built for 2023. It is far too vague and ignores what happens if a true scoundrel should assume the seas of power. And with Trump, we have spotted the numerous ways that its silence is easy to exploit.
