Capitalism is the only system that allows any Tom, Dick, or Harriet to succeed based entirely on merit. Socialism entrenches society into specific classes and there you remain for eternity. So, yes. Capitalism is the only successful system if you are not of the elite. If you are an elitist you fight like hell to eliminate capitalism because you don't want competition from the peons.

The Soviet Union was able to use technology that the Germans had created to put their man in space. Technology developed by some of the best minds on the planet at the time. And they used that technology to drop bombs on London when they could no longer get airplanes to survive the trip. The Soviets stole that technology and then they stagnated.
