CDZ What is a social norm in America that you feel is ridiculous?

You should be honest to criticize your own culture and even yourselves.
There too many strange social norms which are to regulate our lives. Are all of them so useful and proper?
Social norms that are deemed acceptable, not "what I think is wrong with america".

Having to support a wife and family, why can't they support me...

Women are the main breadwinners in a lot of homes... where do you live?

The notion that sex is some nasty act whose depiction is pornographic while wholesale violence is good family entertainment.

I disagree. I think both are welcomed with open arms.

Sex should be done in love and be a private matter.
Violence should be absent.
No casual sex???

Everyone has a right to casual sex. But, not if you are a Christian.

I knew there was a reason I'm not a Christian.

Well you CAN as a Christian, just if you are a Christian, you won't do it because it's not pleasing to God. It will be a sacrifice you will make gladly out of love. Like you would do for your children....

That you need to be a Christian to know right from wrong when Christians seem to do wrong an awful lot.

That sex is something sacred and special reserved for just your spouse.

That sex and pleasure is bad, and war and violence is good.

You don't have to be a Christian to know "right from wrong" - but being a Christian allows the Holy Spirit to live and work within you to do God's will. Being a Christian is not about being "good".

Sex is sacred and special reserved for your spouse. Agreed

Sex and pleasure are not bad. They are gifts from God to be enjoyed between a married male and female.

War and violence are acceptable at God's command.

Sex isn't sacred. Is no more remarkable than an hug or cuddling.

To you it's not sacred. To most it's not, just a bodily function. But a true child of God should feel differently about it....

Wearing ties. What possible use is a tie? Sure won't keep a person warm. They are almost an invitation for a enemy to strangle you with.

Woa, ties are great articles of clothing! And it's not social norm, it's more like style.

"It has become countercultural to chose a lifestyle whose goals are even partly independent of technology." -Pope Francis

If you ask anyone today if they would get a microchip grafted to their brain, most would balk. But if you asked someone ten years ago if they would spend a significant part of their day staring at a tiny screen (iPhone), a device which tracks their every movement and uploads your life to a database, most would probably have balked.

We're rapidly approaching a world where nobody has secrets, at which point the human conscience becomes irrelevant and withers away.

Our social norms change with technology, and it's physically changing our brains as well in terms of which centers are strengthened and which brain areas are atrophied. It's becoming increasingly annoying to have lunch with some people who can't put down the damn phone, or they reflexively ask Siri a question instead of just looking around or thinking for the answer.

Part of the problem is that most jobs require you to go use devices and to participate in social media. For lots of people, it's not optional.

The portrayal of African and historically Middle eastern people as white and the term "sub Saharan" as if there was border patrol that kept Black people out of Northern Africa.

The norm that I don't understand is that America is a democracy - it is even used by our governmental representatives.
This nation was founded as a constitutional republic - in no reality of which I am aware are we now or have we ever been a democracy.

It's not a social norm. I'd call it one of the paradoxes of the US political system.

Ask 10000 people on the street what kind of government we have or what kind of political system we have and more than 50% will answer democratic. That same word is used by representatives and senators to describe our political system. How big a majority do you need for it to be the norm?

Got it, you're right. According to the Constitution it was republic from the very beginning. "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government" (U.S. constitution, Article IV, Section 4)
But called democracy to make people believe they really decide in this country. "First they steal the words, then they steal the meaning” (G.Orwell, 1984)

It is strange to me that a Baptist pastor would run for president.
Why? Most all of the Founding Fathers were very religious people. I don't know which of the early Presidents were outspoken Christians but I know Washington was. I don't know if any were preachers, true, but what's the difference?
