President Donald Trump stationed approximately 1,000 marines on two U.S. Navy warships in preparation for Hurricane Irma relief operations in Florida. The Marines and Sailors will provide logistical and medical support in the wake of the predicted devastation caused by the storm’s high winds, tidal surges, and floods.

those ships have choppers, landing boats and LCACs...the LCACs are air cushioned vehicles that can go places the boats and/or choppers can't....those ships have a huge capacity to handle a lot of problems
their medical capacity is big....if there are only 1000 Marines for the 2 ships, that leaves many racks [ beds ] available
..obviously the ships will stay clear of the hurricane until it's safe to go in

There are more than just the two ships mentioned. The USS New York left Norfolk two days ago with the USS Iwo Jima. The USS Kearsarge had been deployed to the Gulf to help with Houston. Their mission includes water purification.

Trump's handling of national disasters can't be judged yet. He has made lots of promises to the people affected by Hurricane Harvey but it is too soon to tell whether he will be able to fulfill those promises.
