There's a bill in the senate that if passed may just shut down sites like this

I am surprised that this has not been mentioned.

Senators propose granting president emergency Internet power
A new U.S. Senate bill would grant the president far-reaching emergency powers to seize control of or even shut down portions of the Internet.

The legislation announced Thursday says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines, or software firms that the government selects "shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined.
Gee.....you're reeeeaaaalllly on-top-of-things, aren't you??

Because there are few limits on the president's emergency power, which can be renewed indefinitely, the densely worded 197-page bill (PDF) is likely to encounter stiff opposition.

Good. Lieberman is not to be trusted. He has authoritarian views, which is why he sides with the GOP more often than not.
Please!!!

Why does this stuff surprise people? Socialists/Progressives do not fight for individual freedom & liberty. They only fight for more Government power. Vote the Socialists/Progressives out. Make 2010 count people.
Yeah.....what we NEED is more BUSHCO-style Homeland Security.

Gee, I didn't know some people thought this forum was that important that the government would consider shutting it down. Glad to know some people think they've got the reputation of being dangerous to the government.

It's not that this forum or any other forum holds any importance over the other, but what all discussions forums together make up one thing COMMUNICATION Or are you sucked up obama's ass to be able to understand that?

As long as the Socialists/Progressives from both parties are in control, they will continue to vote themselves more powers & control. This country is asleep and while they sleep the Government takes more of their freedoms away. The Socialists/Progressives really are a menace to our nation. When will our nation awaken from its long slumber?
Yeah.....let's (simply) ignore Wall $treet (like we just did, for eight years).

Whatta great idea.

You need to pull your head out of the sand. Liberman isn't a liberal or a socialist or a progressive. He's a right winged democrat. That's why the far right of the GOP loves him so much. And as authoritative as the far right is, Liberman is even farther right.

Lieberman is an Independent. He does caucus with the Democrats though. I would actually label Lieberman a Neocon/Progressive. As far as i'm concerned there aren't any real differences between Neocon/Progressives and Socialists. They're all Big Government stooges in the end. They will continue to vote themselves unlimited powers & control until the people wake up and give them the boot.
....Kinda like the Bush Family.

The original poster which is me wasn't surprised. Started the thread as a warning to others who may have been on the fence for obama. You know the people, the ones who voted for him to see what he could do.
Yeah.....whatta tragedy......

The nation is asleep.
Wanna quick way to wake them up? Start talking this up amonst friends and family. It'll go viral in short order. [Then stand back and watch all Hell break loose] as popular as the Net is? These people will seal their political doom for all time.

What's so profound is that you are able to tie your shoe laces without tying them together.

That's only in the event of a major intrusion by a hacker that shuts down a major communications network, such as weapons deployment capability, simultaneous infiltration markers that would cause chemical plants to blow up, etc. Ironically, 60 Minutes covered this last night. They would need to power down all non-essential computer access, and understandably so. The next full-fledged attack on the United States will probably be a cyber attack.

You might be interested in watching this, if it's ever re-run. A mock response to a cyber attack, which also dealt with your concern about shutting down private Internet services.

Mock cyber attack shows US unpreparedness
Regarding a possible shutdown of the cell phone and Internet service to prevent a cascading effect, the group found out that federal agencies actually don't have the authority to do so, and that companies providing these services might be unwilling to do it when asked.
