The Problem With The anti-Gun Crowd: "65% of mass killings with guns occurred in homes" - Yep. Trying to scare everyone. Playing with statistics can backfire (pun intended). What is the point of articles like this?

Since 2006, every state except Hawaii, New Hampshire and Rhode Island has had a mass killing with a gun

The shootings that generate the most attention occur in the places we go: stores, schools, parks, restaurants, theaters, houses of worship. But most mass killings with guns — shootings in which four or more people are killed, not counting the shooter — take place where we live.

Of the 453 mass killings with guns that have occurred since 2006 in the United States, 296 took place in homes, according to a database maintained by the Associated Press, USA Today and Northeastern University.

Shooters often kill people who are, or presumably once were, close to them. 25 percent killed a parent, child or stepchild, and 23 percent killed a current or former romantic partner. Even some large mass shootings include the killing of a family member in private the same day.

The Sandy Hook shooter, for instance, killed his mother in her bedroom before driving to the school in Newtown, Conn. It was classified as a school shooting because if an incident takes place in multiple locations, the location with the most victims is recorded. When multiple locations involve the same number of victims, the first location is used.

Mass killings with guns happen almost everywhere

These deadly shootings have occurred in nearly every type of community across 47 states and D.C. since 2006. The two states with the largest populations have had the most: California, 50, followed by Texas, 46.

The 38 mass killings with a gun this year have taken place in 20 different states.

Like many here @ usmb who conflate things, this article's basic premise is flawed. Many here should identify with the style and shit here. The basic premise here is disingenuous.

This makes no sense. There have been 38 mass killings, probably 37 or 38 more than in Europe....

this seems like another statistic that needs to be decoupled. as tragic as a "family annihilation" is, it lacks the random nature of a school or workplace event.

additionally. family members should have some amount of "say" in the number and power of weapons in their homes. in my house the 2nd amendment only applies to me. open carry here and die.

Here's the rest of the gun killing stats -

The 65% bit is probably the.....

From 2006 to 2015, out of the more than 1,550 young women killed with a gun in domestic violence situations, 65% were murdered by a dating partner.

....part of the link.

a young woman is taking a huge risk every time she dates. ,more of them are beaten severely or abused sexually than outright shot and killed, but what is wrong with the men? (actually, i may know this answer and you may like it. )

One element is cultural. The other part is, those that feel small, or weak, or underachieving, then want to own a gun.

or maybe not enough fathers and brothers with shotguns?

a 17 year old male will not think with the head above his neck without a little encouragement.

When I say you, I don't mean rampart personally, it's just purely for conversation.

See, I'm UK. I've owned shotguns but we get them to go clay pigeon shooting, to shoot pheasant, to shoot vermin etc.. We have firearms at gun ranges too. But the utter vast majority don't want to own a gun to shoot others, if you have that mentality in the UK and if it comes out in the process of going through the gun procedure with the police, then you won't have a gun/shotgun.

In fact, the Swiss have the Right to BA's, but their culture mentality is to only shoot invading armies, and then the same mentality as the Brits.

So guns are very much cultural, but testosterone gets in the way too. But Americans, on the whole, need to be seen as macho and a gun gives them that reinforcement, especially to those that feel weak etc..

The UK had the RTBA, but it's taken over a century of change to get where we are. The American gun nut expects instant results if a State brings in a background check etc..

The Democrats rabid obsession with Trump is akin to an American gun nut to a gun.

Gun violence does not "touch every corner of the US"

Our murders are concentrated in very small areas of the country where poverty and illegal drugs are prevalent.

this concentration is so sharply delineated that areas in the same city that are separated by less than a mile can have wildly different murder rates but the morons like you who know nothing about these demographics assume that the murder rate is homogenous across all towns cities and states.

Not to mention that anti gun idiots always count suicide as gun violence

the ravages of mass consumerism and cutthroat capitalist competition do seem to leave we americans seeking simple answers to problems which really are too complex for 5.56 mm solutions.

i have been to the uk. cardiff glasgow great places. subj of guns never came up.

the myth here is that guns are banned in the uk and that any registration or licensing will lead inexorably to confiscation. what do you think?

You are a useful idiot for gun control…..

Registration always leads to bans and confiscation…..Britain is the classic example….as are Australia and New Zealand…….and Germany….and France….

A member of the House of Lords wants to take his rich buddies bird hunting on one of his wealthy estates……to you and the British government, that is a legitimate reason for a gun….through his connections he gets a permit.

A woman living alone in London who is afraid of being raped or murdered in her apartment or in an alley after being dragged from a bus stop…..according to you and the British government, that is not a legitimate reason to own a gun…..

As a useful idiot for gun control, how do you support that insane nonsense?

The gun isn’t the issue, you thick English clod……..shacking up with 1) criminals, 2) drug dealers 3) drug addicts 4) alcoholics 5) abusive men. Is the issue……….those men would murder those women with knives, clubs, their bare hands, a 20 dollar camping hatchet from walmart or even gasoline…….

What would have stopped them is the woman 1) not picking them as sex partners and 2) having their own gun and knowing how to use it…..
