This is a common misconception. I held it myself a good while back. The current ice age is known as the Quaternary Glaciation and began 2,588,000 years ago. That ice age is filled with glacial and interglacial periods: the series of spikes and troughs you can see in this graph. We are at the right end of this graph, so well into an interglacial and temperatures have been falling slowly for the last 5,000 years as we were beginning to slide off the peak. This lasted right up till the Industrial Revolution, when the greenhouse effect acting on human CO2 emissions began raising the planet's temperature.

Homo Sapiens appeared about 200,000 years ago. Note that significantly more of that period has been cold than warm (glacial, vice interglacial).

This graph runs right to left. That point where "Permanent North Hemisphere Ice Sheets" is noted, is the beginning of the current ice age.
