We've made the Earth wobble more

"Between 1993 and 2010, the tilt of the Earth shifted by 31.5 inches, corresponding with people’s worldwide withdrawals of underground water. Researchers published the findings in June in the journal Geophysical Research Letters."

"It has also likely caused the world to wobble more. The journal Science’s news section likens the motion to a spinning top or basketball on a finger having weight redistributed. This metaphorical basketball also has water-balloon-like properties of “sloshing” slightly."

"The total mass of Earth's hydrosphere is about 1.4 × 10^18 tonnes, which is about 0.023% of Earth's total mass. At any given time, about 2 × 10^13 tonnes of this is in the form of water vapor in the Earth's atmosphere.

So, given that ground water consists of only the tiniest fraction of a percent of the entire weight of The Earth, most of which remains in Earth's oceans.

The pumping of ground water can't play any role in determining inconsistencies in the Earth's spin.

It will play a big role in massive water shortages, though. The underground water reservoirs in the US are ending soon.

I won't debate that but ... the cause of Earth's procession (the scientific term for "wobble") has been well known for more than a century. The wobble phenomenon itself has been happening since before life even existed on this planet.

Even if you were not aware of the science -- see Posts 2 and 4 -- anybody believing anything posted by Yahoo as News is going to have major problems if they expect to get real news .As for believing it , rofl .
Equally for all major browsers so called News .

The science is in Posts 2 and 4 , OP .
But why would anybody wanting a serious News source ever use Yahoo ?
All Browser relayed News is of a very low checked status and much is deliberate hogwash .
To the extent that it is invariably partial or Fake News .
Deliberately .

BTW Fresh water shortages are a separate major concern . But desalination should solve matters though cost implications are interesting .

This is a mistake that deniers make: small does not mean none. And small can have large effects. Look over chaos, turbulence and resonance if you'd like some explanation

The Earth is an oblate spheroid with the mass unevenly distributed. Of course there will be a procession in its spin. It's basic physics.

And denier is a term religion fanatics apply to heretics, not a term used to discuss scientific hypothesis.

Are you dropping your claim that "The pumping of ground water can't play any role in determining inconsistencies in the Earth's spin."?

Not at all, because procession isn't a planetary inconsistency, it's a physical inevitability.

It's prEcession and your dancing. Badly.

When the Earth rotates on its spin axis — an imaginary line that passes through the North and South Poles — it drifts and wobbles. These spin-axis movements are called “polar motion” in scientific parlance. NASA scientists have computed that the measurements for the 20th century show that the spin axis drifted about 4 inches (10 centimeters) per year. Over the course of a century, that becomes more than 11 yards (10 meters).
NASA scientists have broadly categorized three processes that are responsible for this drifting if the earth. The three processes are: contemporary mass loss primarily in Greenland, glacial rebound, and mantle convection.

Note that this is NOT precession.

Precession is caused by the gravitational influence of the Sun and the Moon acting on Earth's equatorial bulge. To a much lesser extent, the planets exert influence as well. The projection onto the sky of Earth's axis of rotation results in two notable points at opposite directions: the north and south celestial poles.Sep 22, 2023

I have to be honest here, I am more concerned about Guam tipping over and drowning everyone than I am drinking too much water and then watching the earth wobble.

I don't believe the OP's article had the slightest intention of characterizing this as a threat. It's just an interesting bit of science.

Kalifornia regulations prevent farmers from replenishing the aquifer.
