You want some real irony? A consumption tax is also the ultimate progressive tax - and yet the left vehemently opposes it.Like I keep saying, the more you tax something the less of it you get. That's why taxes on consumption are superior to taxes on production.
The income tax is a tax on production.
I favor repealing the income tax and replacing it with the Fair Tax.
A person with Bill Gates money won't give a damn how high the taxes are on a Lamborghini. You could hit mansions, exotic automobiles, private jets, etc. hard. The rich would absolutely pay their "fair share".
They tried that with the yacht tax a while back. All it did was decimate the American yacht building industry. But I do agree a consumption tax would give every person more control over how much tax they pay, because they could then decide how much they wanted to buy.
That's probably the biggest reason the left opposes it, they can't stand anyone having the freedom to pay less taxes.
