Actually, "States Rights" was the paramount issue that people of the South felt most strongly about.

Of course slavery was just one of the major points of contention. But not the only issue which created animosity between the Southern states and the Northern dominated federal government. .....

States Rights of course was the excuse use to justify slavery, much like many of the issues that the GOP now uses States Rights to justify.
