Well the American people didn't think so, nor the historians that have gone over his New Deal and the war with a fine tooth comb.

I'm sure most liberal historians view him as a great president. They like what he did to American citizens of Japanese heritage who had legally immigrated to this country, some of whom were second and even third generation citizens. Those historians also have no problems with his treatment of African Americans, in particular Jesse Owens. After the 1936 Olympics, he invited all the American medal winners except African Americans to the White House, even though the previous president had included them in his invitation. Jesse Owens said Adolf Hitler treated him better than FDR did. Adolf Hitler sent Jesse Owens a personally signed letter of congratulations. FDR didn't even respond to the letter Owens sent him. When Jesse Owens made a public appearance for FDR's Republican opponent in the next presidential election, Jesse Owens stated that "Alf Landon was the only presidential candidate willing to shake a black man's hand in public." FDR was so enraged that he sent the IRS after Owens and financially ruined him. Owens spent the rest of his life in debt to the IRS and lived in poverty. FDR vetoed anti-lynching legislation because he didn't want to get involved in the "negro problem".

FDR signed an Executive Order stating that all personal income in excess of $25,000 (about 350 thousand with inflation) a year would be taxed at 100%. No, FDR totally did the right thing. There were Japanese spies all over the California waterfront constantly radioing intel out into the Pacific. Had they told their handlers about the Yorktown getting repaired so fast and returning to battle, which no one expected, we might very well have lost the Battle of Midway --- and the war. I will always support interning or banishing an enemy population in the US aiding the war effort of the enemy. Like all the happy dancing Muslims on 9/11/2001.
