FDR's internment of the Japanese may seem terribly wrong today but unlike Trump's use of the powers of his office to blackmail a foreign power and an ally for political gain, the internment was not meant to influence an election, and was legally within the powers of the president during wartime. The reason for internment was for the protection of Japanese Americans. The hatred across America for the Japanese was being cultivated by the government, Hollywood, and every newscaster and newspaper in America. You could hardly pickup a newspaper without reading the atrocities of the "Dirty Japs". Had there been a poll in America about the internment, it would surely have been hugely supported by the public. The hatred for Japanese in 1942 made living in America for Japanese American dangerous at best.
