OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A second-grade teacher in Northern California was placed on leave while a school and police investigate accounts by students that classmates engaged in oral sex and stripped off some of their clothes during class, officials said Friday.
The investigation was under way at Markham Elementary School in Oakland, where the principal notified parents of the situation in a letter Thursday.
"We believe if the reports are true, there was a serious lapse of judgment or lack of supervision in the classroom," said Troy Flint, a spokesman for the Oakland Unified School District. "We're investigating how could this have happened. It seems unthinkable to us, just the same way it does to the public."
The male teacher, whose name has not been released, told investigators he did not see any of the acts that authorities suspect occurred last week. The teacher is barred from campus at least until the investigation is completed.
The principal learned of the allegations Wednesday after a student gave an account to a teacher's assistant, Flint said.
"Upon hearing these reports, we immediately launched an investigation which, to date, suggests that the reports have merit," Principal Pam Booker wrote in the letter to parents. "We have interviewed all the student participants who were implicated, as well as their teacher, and we continue to investigate the matter aggressively."
One incident involved several students who partially undressed and acted disruptively during class, while the other involved students who engaged in oral sex, district officials said.
"I apologize for this and assure you that we are collaborating with counselors and parents to provide support to those involved, address any concerns and take whatever actions are necessary to ensure that a similar act does not occur again," Booker told parents in the letter.
Counselors were at the school Friday to speak with students.
District officials emphasized the students were not accused of any wrongdoing.
"It's an incident of kids expressing their natural curiosity that went too far because an adult didn't step in," Flint said.
Some parents said they were outraged when they received the letter and saw the story on the news.
"It kind of scares me to know that the teachers aren't really watching them," said Ane Musuva, who has two children at Markham. "I don't want my kids growing up in this type of environment."

This story kind of freaked me out. They're just kids who had no idea what they were doing. At the age of like 6 (2nd grader) they are just shooting blanks and don't know what they are doing. Had it been two 13-18 year olds in class having sex, then it would probably result in a suspension.

This sort of stuff shouldn't start happening until 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. Children are asexual (they have no sexuality) until they are 13. Why wasn't the teacher paying attention to his class? These kids are most likely being sexually abused by their parents (or their teacher) and that is why they are playing doctor.

It's understandable that you'd be distressed, Rebecca. It'd be hard to imagine a more alarming headline. But it does not say the teacher sexually abused the kids...it says the kids were acting out together.

I say be patient, and wait and see if any of this is true, and if so, what actually happened. I find it impossible to believe kids were undressing in front of a teacher and not stopped. It may be nothing but one kid starting a rumor, or a damaged child acting out in the bathroom at school....you just don't know yet.

Not in the classroom, of course. But two teenagers having consensual sex is perfectly alright. Almost all teens do it anyway, I'm sure you (or most people at your high school) did/do.

Spoken like a 14 year old. The older (wiser) you get the more you realize how little you can get away with without suffering the consequences.

How was that spoken like a 14 year old? Let's face it, us adults can't really stop them from having sex anyway, the best we can do is educate them properly on sex. Teach them about condoms, birth control, etc.

It's not the 1600s where you can use a chastity belt on your teens.

I dunno. What paper did you get this from? If it is a responsible news outlet, I still say all you can be certain of so far is that an investigation is underway.

I'm not saying nothing happened....mebbe something did. But as reported, the story strains belief. Can you really imagine any teacher ignoring students acting this way in class?

When I read it, I was reminded of the McMartin case. Hysteria whipped up complaints of child sex abuse in day care centers that reached such epic proportions, any reasonable person would have been able to see they could not be true -- and decades later, after lives were ruined and children were traumatized, we know the accusations were entirely false.

I posted a link...

O, sorry. I see that now. (New people cannot use this

to create a hot link until they have written a dozen or so posts, so I had not noticed.)

Well, I'd say the Associated Press was reliable.....if this turns out to be true, I think I will be just speechless. Where would little kids get such an idea to begin with?

That's the problem right there: a cavalier attitude about teen sex. It's not perfectly alright for a variety of reasons. "Everybody does it" does not fly with a lot of parents who try to raise their children with some sense of self respect and dignity. I can assure you that teen sex was not practiced by the majority when I went to school - it was an entirely different era.

you´re harvesting what you´ve seeded.

The happening of an event like this was just a matter of time. What dou you expect from these overporned youth of today? The growing ones are dependent about that what sey see what adults are doing has to be the adult way of living. It´s the natural way of them, being curious about what the adults are doing and copying it, because every child want to become an adult. If we present them more and more examples of hardcore pornografy as the normal adult behaviour (or even as one example of it), we can´t be upset when they´re counterfeiting what they see after two clicks on every internet computers - ore today on every cell phone.

I´m just 39 years old and I grew up with pornography as well. But when I was young boy, curious and hot about pornography, like every male teenager, it was a very difficult act to get it. You had to know who´s father owns a VCR AND you had to have the "right" friends with the "right" fathers who already own porno movies AND the sons knew wher they were hidden. If you could watch 1 porn movie in a year, you´ve been a lucky boy.

But today....in the neverending mantra of the "free market" and that everything is allowed what brings cash, the pornografy (which became itself to a soul-and-body fretting monster) is avaiable by everyone who has an internet connection, and that means 90% ov every western households.

Our kids are now clashing to these medias, with their innocent souls and their natural curiousity, as said, dependent about that what they see is "normal", "adult" and sooner or later expected from them.

I´ve got several kids in my neighbourhood who started consuming pornography in the age of 12. Well, is pandora´s box once opened, you can´t close it again as everybody knows. But I never stop telling them, that this isn´t adult. 90% of female porn actresses are prostitutes, what means that they already made the experience of several rapes and any other sexual violence acts. I don´t stop telling them that suffering this expieriences is the onliest way to transform a hopeful women on her search of love to a everybody-is-allowed-to-do-everything-with-me-vicitims as they see on the these movies.

But I´m in fear that the real consequences of these youth overporing are just rising.

Ap reports what has been reported to them.

That doesn't necessarily make it true, it merely make it true that it was reported.

I don't know about you guys but the thought that a teacher is going to miss (or ignore) 2nd graders having oral sex in the classroom strains my credibility alarm.

And the report does mention that the stories the kids are giving don't really jibe, too, doesn't it?

I just don't believe this story, folks.

I'd need one hell of a lot of proof (and testimony from kids is notoriously unreliable) before I'd buy into this story.

Second Graders in Oakland engage in Oral Sex with teacher and class present
I'm sure it had nothing to do with their parents, MTV or American system, and it was all teachers fault who probably stood in disbelief - THESE DEMENTED MTV FREAKS WERE DOING IT ON THEIR OWN, WILINGLY, I would punish the parents first and ban the students involved in this from school PERMENANTLY they can go get a job as child prostitutes in thailand or some place

Generally, children who engage in sexual behavior at such a young age have been exposed to it and/or were sexually abused. I would definitely look at the parents.

Sexually active at 7 years, something is not right outside of the classroom.
