Save Social Security by Rasing the Minimum Wage

Raising the minimum wage from $5.15 per hour to $8.00 could not only help millions of Americans but could save our Social Security.
I feel the minimum wage of $5.15 per hour is immoral. A person working forty hours per week, 52 weeks a year clears barely enough to pay for medical insurance for his family. This is a disgrace! The minimum wage hasn't gone up in years. We need to raise the minimum wage to $8.00 per hour, then raise it another 25 cents per hour each year thereafter.

Raising the minimum wage to $8.00 would shore up social security because of the added taxes paid to the Social Security Fund. This amount would be more than one might think.
A worker earning the minimum wage of $8.00 would contribute an extra $712.28 per year to the Social Security fund. The worker would pay $364.14 and his employer would pay the same. The worker would still clear an increase of over $100 per week in his paycheck.
The government is saying our Social Security Trust Fund will run out in about forty years. I have estimated the extra money collected by all the people working for minimum wage and the extra earned by those earning less than $8.00 per hour over the next 40 years along with a very modest interest would equal trillions of dollars.

Thanks for your support,

You don't have my support, G Edward Cook.

I can't support anyone that wants to FORCE an employer to pay X per hr.
I can't support anyone that thinks the government should provide for me.
I can't support anyone who thinks that it's okay for the government to take my money with the promise they will provide for me.
I can'support anyone that thinks there really is a Social Security Trust Fund.

In short, I can't and don't support MORONS! :)

I never said there was a Social Security trust fund. Bush gave it away to the rich with his tax cut, that was what the surplus was.
Let's look back in America history before there was a minimum wage, social security and unemployment insurance, back to 1929. America looked like a third world country with millions of Americans hungry, homeless and jobless. Tent cities were all over America (this is one of the main things social security has prevented). I do not want America to return to those days, do you? If we allow corporations to do as they please, what's to stop the oil companies from doubling the price of oil so they can double their profits?
Oh, I forgot, they just did that and the American public stopped them by not buying gas or oil, right? You stopped buying gas, didn't you?

Abolish Social Security or reduce the 'mandatory' contribution to about 1% of income; let "ME" decide how to invest "my" earnings.

That'll fix social security. :)

Okay Mr. TEAMSTER, tell me/us how social security or unemployment insurance would have prevented the stock market crash of 1929. You IDIOT.

No, I didn't stop buying gas, did you? Did you stop buying anything really?

Like yer profile.

Eight dollars per hour is a minimum wage that a person working full time can survive on. $25 is union wages. $10,000 per hour is CEO wages!

Why do businesses OWE it to their employees to make sure the employees have enough money? If A guy needs $8/hr to live, and only makes $5/hr it seems to me the guy needs to get a 2nd job.

Unions are sooo in need of being abolished. Unions serve ONE purpose - to give Union Officials a job.

I read that the tax gap was even bigger now, after the cuts. Say the bottom tax bracket was paying 10%, and the top tax bracket was paying 20%. That's a 10% difference. The bottom bracket was cut 5%, and the top bracket was only cut 2%. So now, instead of a 10% diffreence, there is a 13% difference.

Not to mention the fact that 10% of $100,000 is A LOT more than 10% of $10,000. Give up the "tax cuts for the rich" line. The top earners pay WAAAYY more taxes than the bottom earners, and have worked harder to do it.

Hi, Let me start with how social security would have prevented the stock market crash, It wouldn't but It would have helped lessen it. After the crash it was programs like social security and unemployment insurance that helped bring back America. The crash was caused by corporations spending much more money than they had. The only thing like this today it the way Bush is spending like a drunken sailer. this time it may be the US Government that crashes!

I did buy less as did you, after spending so much more for oil and gas I had less to spend on the products you make.

Mom4: The poor and working class pay a MUCH Higher percentage toward Social Security than the Rich. A person making minimum wage pays more Social security taxes than a person making millions on the stock market who pays nothing.

dmp: I hope you do well; however, if you don't, are my kids going have to support you when your too old to work? PAY YOUR SHARE!

Mr. P: Did you flunk math in school? A fast food restaurant with 5 employees paying $6 per hour and raising the pay to $8 per hour would have to pay an extra $10 per hour. A restaurant with 5 employees must sell 50 meals per hour just to stay opened. Each meal costs about $5. To make up for the $10 per hour the owner has to pay, he must raise the price of each meal 20 cents. (.20 X 50 = $10) The Big Mac is only half the meal so it will only go up ten cents. Thats right, the price for a Big Mac would go from $2.39 to $2.49 not $10.

I joined this group thinking this was a Pro American group; however, all I am hearing is Let the Corporations (most partly and many completely owned by foreign countries) pay the American Workers Slave Wages. Why should French, German, Japan and Chinese Corporations be allowed to come to America and not have to pay AMERICANS a living wage. As a Senator from Pennsylvania, I would see to it that Americans come First, Rick Santorum doesn't!
Sincerely,
G Edward Cook

Things will work out, or I'll try harder. Simple as that. See, unlike you, I don't expect the Government owes me anything but security from Terrorists and Criminals...not much more than that. I won't bother YOUR kids for help because I'm not their responsibility. I'm my own.

BECAUSE the gov't has stolen thousands of me I'll expect to get a SS Check when I'm older - however, if I'd had that $ to invest I'd be FAR better off.

Just caught this - you are PRO UNION then talk about slaves? Union members are slaves to their unions. This group is PRO american because we're anti-socialism.

Try Canada.

Not quite sure how that's going work. But, it would put millions of small businesses out of business. Is that what you want?

What's immoral about paying $5.15 an hour for unskilled labor?

I haven't seen any "support" yet eddy. And what you're suggesting we do would do more harm than good to the American economy. You're just another liberal coming in here purporting your socialist ideas, of which none work.

I'll give you credit for one thing, you at least "tried", whereas the rest of your liberal brethren waste 99% of their waking breath just following around behind us conservatives bashing our ideas, of which most work. We've proven that, and that's why people are now voting for us in record numbers, with no indication of slowing.

Then what is that check my parents receive from the government each month?

And if my memory serves me right, it was President Bush that wanted to undertake the monumental task of S.S. reform, until the likes of hitlery clinton and her liberal brigade poo poo'd the idea out of bounds, although it was them who was chanting that S.S. was in deep trouble just a year or two ago. Yeah these liberals, they can lie right through their fucking teeth, and keep right on smiling. Assholes.

When all else fails, bash Bush... :lame2:

The "surplus" was nothing more than a complex manipulation of the numbers, and was "projected" at that. There never REALLY was any money.

The Bush tax cut was the best thing to happen to this economy in fifteen years. If they don't make it permanent, then they're fools.
