Instead of requiring everyone buy health insurance, we should BAN health insurance. Yes, it sounds crazy, but step out of the box and here me out for a moment.....
One of the main reasons health care costs so much is because it's a regularly used service which is regularly paid through insurance. Insurance, by necessity, will drive the price the people pay up. Insurance companies are in the game to make money. How can they make money unless they charge you the cost they paid plus a profit margin? Of course they can't. That's why a single person can pay up to $100 a month for insurance coverage that may still require the insured to still pay a $500 deductible, and 60% of costs after that, etc. Over a year's time with one or two doctor's visits, you pay in $1200 for the insurance, and then paid for the entire doctor's visits as your deductible amount. What was the point?
Health insurance is different than, for example, fire insurance for your home. Chances are, you're not going to ever have your house catch fire. It happens to a comparatively small portion of the population, ever. Most people never end up needing to make a claim under that insurance plan, so you pay a relatively small amount for a relatively small chance of needing the insurance, but if you are ever so unfortunate you receive a large benefit. With health insurance, you're going to need services at various times throughout your life. And the insurance pays for those mundane things all the time. The real need that we all have is the "off" chance that we have a major accident or severe illness that would be out of our hands. The small chance things that would require small fees for a policy that would return large rewards for having the policy. But since the insurance is paying for every pair of gloves the doctor used on you, every tongue depressor, every strip of white paper on the exam table that was used on you, the insurance company is constantly paying out for you, and has to recoup those expenses from you.
Because of the proliferation of the deep pockets of insurance, medical expenses have reached a point where it's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to pay for many routine medical services without insurance. It's easy for insurance to pay a big check, and then collect that from you later on. And since the doctors and other providers are all in it to make money too, they charge as much as they can. What happens is that it all inflates to the point where health insurance has become a necessity if you want to ever have any kind of health services.
What this all comes down to is that as long as there is demand for services, and as long as that demand is capable of paying, prices will not go down. They will stay at their astronomical levels. The only way to get prices to ever come down to manageable levels is if demand drops (and that of course won't happen) or if the ability of that demand to pay drops. That would force providers to adjust to the market.
By banning the sale or provision of health insurance individuals would not be able to pay the astronomical prices for medical services. This would force the prices to come down as the providers adjust to the demand within the market. Also, without people paying into health insurance, they'll be paying overall less money for their medical services.
