Psalms - The Book of Prayer, Praise & Meditation

Petition for God's Intervention

Psalm 35

Contend O LORD, with those who
contend with me,
fight against those who fight
against me.

Take up shield and buckler,
arise and come to my aid.
Brandish spear and javelin
against those who pursue me.

Say to my soul,
"I am your salvation."

May those who seek my life
be disgraced and put to shame,
may those who plot my ruin
be turned back in dismay.

May they be like chaff before the wind,
with the angel of the LORD
driving them away,
may their path be dark and slippery,
with the angel of the LORD pursuing them.

Since they hid their net for me
without cause
and without cause dug a pit for me,
may ruin overtake them by surprise -
may the net they hid entangle them,
may they fall into the pit, to their ruin.

Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD,
and delight in his salvation.

My whole being will exclaim,
Who is like you, O LORD?
You rescue the poor from those too
strong for them,
the poor and the needy from those
who rob them.

Ruthless witnesses come forward,
they question me on things I
know nothing about.

They repay me evil for good,
and leave my soul forlorn.

Yet when they were ill, I put on
sackcloth
and humbled myself with fasting.

When my prayers returned to me
unanswered,
I went about mourning
as though for my friend or brother.

I bowed my head in grief
as though weeping for my
mother.
But when I stumbled,
they gathered in glee,
attackers gathered against me
when I was unaware.

They slandered me without
ceasing.
Like the ungodly they maliciously
mocked,
they gnashed their teeth against me.

O LORD how long will you look on?

Rescue my life from their ravages,
my precious life from these lions.

I will give you thanks in the great assembly,
among throngs of people I will praise you.

Let not those gloat over me
who are my enemies without a cause,
let not those who hate me without reason
maliciously wink the eye.

They do not speak peacably,
but devise false accusations,
against those who live quietly in the land.

They gape at me and say, Aha!
Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it.

O LORD, you have seen this, be not silent,
Do not be far from me, O LORD.

Awake, and rise to my defense!
Contend for me, my God and my Lord.

Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God,
do not let them gloat over me.

Do not let them thing, Aha, just what we wanted!
or say, We have swallowed him up.

May all who gloat over my distress
be put to shame and confusion,
may all who exalt themselves over me
be clothed with shame and disgrace.

May those who delight in my vindication,
shout for joy and gladness,
may they always say, The LORD be exalted,
who delights in his servant.

My tongue will speak of your righteousness
and of your praise all day long.

The Excellent Loving Kindness of God

Psalm 36

An oracle is within my heart
concerning the sinfulness of the wicked.

There is no fear of God
before his eyes.

For in his eyes he flatters
himself
too much to detect or hate his
sin.
The words of his mouth are deceitful,
he has ceased to be wise and to do good.

Even on his bed he plots evil,
he commits himself to a sinful course,
and does not reject what is
wrong.

Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies,
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the great deep,
O LORD, you preserve both men and beast.

How priceless is your unfailing love!

Both high and low among men
find refuge in the shadow of your wings,
They feast on the abundance of your house,
you give them drink from your rivers of delights.

For with you is the fountain of life,
in your light we see light.

Continue your love to those who know
you,
your righteousness to the upright
in your heart.

May the foot of the proud not
come against me,
nor the hand of the wicked drive me away.

See how the evildoers lie fallen -
thrown down, not able to rise!

Rest in the Lord

Psalm 37

Do not fret because of evil men
or be envious of those who do wrong,
for they are like the grass they will soon
wither,
like green plants they will soon
die away.

Trust in the LORD and do good,
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

Delight yourself in the LORD
and he will give you the desires of your
heart.

Commit your way to the LORD,
trust in him and he will do this:

He will make your righteousness
shine like the dawn,
the justice of your cause like
the noonday sun.

Be still before the LORD and wait
patiently for him,
do not fret when men succeed in
their ways,
when they carry out their wicked schemes.

Refrain from anger and turn away from wrath,
do not fret - it leads only to evil.
For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD
will inherit the land.

A little while, and the wicked will
be no more,
though you look for them, they will not be found.

But the meek will inherit the land
and enjoy great peace.

The wicked plot against the
righteous,
and gnash their teeth at them.

But the LORD laughs at the wicked,
for he knows their day is coming.

The wicked draw the sword,
and bend the bow
to bring down the poor and needy,
to slay those whose ways are
upright.

But their swords shall pierce their own hearts
and their bows shall be broken.

Better the little that the righteous have
than the wealth of many wicked,
for the power of the wicked shall be broken,
but the LORD upholds the righteous.

The days of the blameless are
known to the LORD,
and their inheritance will endure
forever.

In times of disaster they will not wither,
in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

But the wicked will perish.
The LORD's enemies will be like
the beauty of fields,
they vanish - vanish like smoke.

The wicked borrow and do not repay,
but the righteous give generously,
those the LORD blesses will inherit
the land,
but those he curses will be cut
off.

If the LORD delights in a man's way,
he makes his steps firm,
though he stumble, he will not fall,
for the LORD upholds him with his
hand.

I was young and now I am old,
yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken,
or their children begging bread,
They are always generous and lend freely,
their children will be blessed.

Turn from evil and do good,
then you will dwell in the land forever.

For the Lord loves the just
and will not forsake his faithful ones.

under construction.............

Continuing Psalm 37

They will be protected forever,
but the offspring of the wicked will be cut off,
the righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.

The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom,
and his tongue speaks what is just.
The law of his God is in his heart, his feet do not slip.

the wicked lie in wait for the righteous, seeking their very lives,
but the LORD will not leave them in their power or let them be condemned when
brought to trial.

Wait for the LORD and keep his way.

He will exalt you to inherit the land,
when the wicked are cut off, you will see it.

I have seen a wicked and ruthless man,
flourishing like a green tree in its native soil,
but he soon passed away and was no more.
though I looked for him, he could not be found.

Consider the blameless, observe the upright,
there is a future for the man of peace.
But all sinners will be destroyed,
the future of the wicked will be cut off.

The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD,
he is their stronghold in time of trouble.

The LORD helps them and delivers them,
he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.

Psalm 38

O LORD, do not rebuke me in your anger,
or discipline me in your wrath.

For your arrows have pierced me,
and your hand has come down upon me.

Because of your wrath there is no health in my body,
my bones have no soundness because of my sin.

My guilt has overwhelmed me
like a burden too heavy to bear.

My wounds fester and are loathsome
because of my sinful folly.
I am bowed down and brought very low,
all day long I go about mourning.
My back is filled with searing pain,
there is no health in my body.

I am feeble and utterly crushed, I groan in anguish of heart.
All my longings lie open before you, O LORD,
my sighing is not hidden from you.

My heart pounds, my strength fails me, even the light has gone from my eyes.

My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds,
my neighbors stay far away.

Those who seek my life set their traps,
those who would harm me talk of my ruin.
all the day long they plot deception.

I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear,
like a mute, who cannot offer no reply.

I will wait for you, O LORD,
you will answer, O Lord my God,
For I said, Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me
when my foot slips.

For I am about to fall,
and my pain is ever with me.
I confess my iniquity,
I am troubled by my sin.

Many are those who are my enemies,
those who hate me without reason are numerous.
Those who repay my good with evil,
slander me when I pursue what is good.

O LORD, do not forsake me,
be not far from me, O my God.
Come quickly to help me,
O Lord my Savior.

Psalm 39

I said, I will watch my ways
and keep my tongue from sin,
I will put a muzzle on my mouth
as long as the wicked are in my presence.

But when I was silent and still,
not even saying anything good,
my anguish increased.

My heart grew hot within me and as I meditated, the fire burned,
then I spoke with my tongue.

Show me O LORD, my life's end
and the number of my days,
let me know how fleeting is my life.

You have made my days a mere handbreadth,
the span of my years is nothing before you.
Each man's life is but a breath.
Selah
Man is a mere phantom as he goes
to and fro
He bustles about, but only
in vain.
He heaps up wealth, not knowing
who will get it.

But now, Lord, what do I look
for?

My hope is in you.

Save me from all my transgressions,
do not make me the scorn of fools.

I was silent I would not open my mouth,
for you are the one who has done this.

Remove your scourge from me,
I am overcome by the blow of your hand.

You rebuke and discipline men for their sin,
You consume their wealth like a moth -
each man is but a breath. Selah

Hear my prayer, O LORD,
listen to my cry for help,
be not deaf to my weeping.

For I dwell with you as an alien,
a stranger, as all my fathers
were.
Look away from me, that I may rejoice again
before I depart and am no more.

Psalm 39

I said, I will watch my ways

Psalms was written to speak to the spirit, not the flesh of man. Christians can't hear the prophecies in Psalms that us saints can hear.

Psalm 40

I waited patiently for the LORD,
he turned to me and heard my cry.

He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire,
he set my feet upon a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.

He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many see it and fear
and put their trust in the LORD.

Blessed is the man
who makes the LORD his trust,
who does not look to the proud,
to those who turn aside to false
gods.

Many, O LORD my God,
are the wonders you have done.
The things you planned for us
no one can recount to you,
were I to speak and tell of them,
they would be too many to
declare.

Sacrifice and offering you did not
desire,
but my ears you have
pierced
burnt offerings and sin offerings
you did not require.

Then I said, Here I am, I have come -
it is written about me in the scroll.
I desire to do your will, O my God,
your law is within my heart.

I proclaim righteousness in the great assembly,
I do not seal my lips, as you know, O LORD.
I do not hide your righteousness in my heart,
I speak of your faithfulness and salvation.

I do not conceal your love and your truth
from the great assembly.

Do not withhold your mercy from me, O LORD,
may your love and your truth
always protect me.

For troubles without number
surround me,
my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.
They are more than the hairs of my head,
and my heart fails within me.

Be pleased, O LORD, to save me,
O LORD, come quickly to help me.
May all who seek to take my life,
be put to shame and confusion,
may all who desire my ruin
be turned back in disgrace.

May all who say to me, Aha! Aha! be appalled at their own shame.

But may all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you,
may those who love your salvation
always say,
"The LORD be exalted!"

Yet I am poor and needy,
may the LORD think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer,
O My God, do not delay.

Psalm 41

Blessed is he who has regard for the weak,
the LORD delivers him in times of trouble.
The LORD will protect him
and preserve his life,
he will bless him in the land
and not surrender him to the desire of his foes.

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed
and restore him from his bed of illness.

I said, O LORD, have mercy on me,
heal me, for I have sinned against you.

My enemies say of me in malice,
When will he die and his name perish?

Whenever one comes to see me,
he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander,
the he goes out and spreads it abroad.

Alll my enemies whisper together
against me,
they imagine the worst for me
saying,
A vile disease has beset him,
he will never get up from the place
where he lies.

Even my close friend, whom I trusted,
he who shared my bread,
has lifted up his heel against me.

But you, O LORD, have mercy upon me,
raise me up, that I may repay them,
I know that you are pleased with
me,
for my enemy does not triumph
over me.

In my integrity you uphold me
and set me in your presence
forever.

Praise be to the LORD, the God of
Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen.

This concludes the First Book of Psalms

The Book of Psalms is the largest book in the bible. It also one of the most read. It can be very personal and also very practical in its application. I believe the Book of Psalms has a message for every person. Reading the Psalms will lift your spirit, instruct your soul, give health to your body and by meditating upon them - beautify your mind.. King David encouraged himself in the Lord and these Psalms were written down so that you too can encourage yourself in the Lord!

Enjoy! :eusa_angel:
I am of the opinion the Bible (and every word in it) has one (and only one) message and that message is only one word................LOVE.

You are a beautiful person Jeremiah and I don't think I could say that enough.

Billy, you are very sweet but I really cannot do anything good apart from Christ. It is his life you are looking at - not mine.. mine was totally obsene! Believe me... like totally... I'm depending on him - every minute - every hour - and he is there. Christ is beautiful. He makes everything beautiful. Even when it isn't.

Book II of the Book of Psalms

Psalm 42 - KJV

Seek after the Lord

As the hart panteth after the waterbrooks,
so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God,
when shall I come and appear before God?

My tears have been meat day and night,
while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me,
for I have gone with the multitude,

I went with them to the house of God,
with the voice of joy and praise,
with the multitude that kept holy day.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul?
And why art thou disquieted in me?
Hope thou in God, for I will yet praise him,
for the help of his countenance.

O my God, my soul is cast down within me,
therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan,
and of the Hermonites, from the hill of Mizar.

Deep calleth unto deep
at the noise of thy waterspouts
all of thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime
and in the night his song
shall be with me,
and my prayer unto the God of my life.

I will say unto God my rock,
Why hast thou forgotten me?
Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

As with a sword in my bones,
mine enemies reproach me, while they say daily unto me,
Where is thy God?

Why art thou cast down, O my soul?
And why art thou disquieted within me?
For I shall yet praise him,
who is the health of my countenance,
and my God.

Psalm 43 - KJV

"Hope in God"

Judge me, O God, and plead my cause
before an ungodly nation.
O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

For thou art the God of my strength,
why dost thou cast me off?
Why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

O send out thy light and thy truth,
let them lead me, let them bring me
unto thy holy hill,
and to thy tabernacles.

Then will I go unto the altar of God,
unto God my exceeding joy,
yea, upon the harp will I praise thee,
O God my God.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul?
And why art thou disquieted within me?
Hope in God,
for I shall yet praise him,
who is the health of my countenance,
who is my God.

Prayer for Deliverance

Psalm 44 - KJV

We have heard with our ears, O God,
our fathers have told us,
what work thou didst in their days,
in the times of old.

How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand,
and plantedst them, how thou didst afflict the people
and cast them out.

For they got not the land in possession by their own sword,
neither did their own arm save them,
by thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance,
bcause thou hadst favour unto them.

Thou art my King, O God, command deliverance for Jacob.

Through thee will we push down our enemies,
through thy name will we tread them under
that rise up against us.

For I will not trust in my bow,
neither shall my sword save me.

But thou hast saved us from our enemies,
and hast put them to shame that hated us.

In God we boast all the day long,
and praise thy name for ever. Selah

But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame,
and goest not forth with our armies.

Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy,
and they which hate us spoil themselves.

Thou has given us like sheep appointed for meat,
and hast scattered us among the heathen.

Thou sellest thy people for nought,
and dost not increase thy wealth by thy price.

Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbors,
a scorn and derision, to them that are round about us.

Thou makest us a byword among the heathen,
a shaking of the head among the people.

My confusion is continually before me,
and the shame of my face hath covered me.

For the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth,
by reason of the enemy and the avenger.

All that is come upon us, yet have we not forgotten thee,
neither have we dealt falsely in our covenant.

Our heart is not turned back,
neither have our steps declined from thy way.

Though thou has sore broke us in the place of dragons,
and covered us with the shadow of death.

If we had forgotten the name of our God,
or stretched out our hands to a strange god.

Shall not God search this out?
For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long,
we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord?
Arise, cast us not off for ever.

Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and forgettest our affliction
and our oppression?

For our soul is bowed down to the dust,
our belly cleaved unto the earth.

Arise, for our help,
and redeem us for thy mercies' sake.

The Psalm of the Great King

Psalm 45

My heart is stirred by a noble theme,
as I recite my verses for the king,
my tongue is the pen of a ready writer,

You are the most excellent of men,
and your lips have been anointed of grace,
since God has blessed you forever.

Gird your sword upon your side,
O mighty one,
clothe yourself with splendor and majesty.

In your majesty ride forth victoriously,
in behalf of truth, humility and righteousness,
let your right hand display awesome deeds.

Let your sharp arrows piece the hearts of the king's enemies,
let the nations fall beneath your feet.

Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever.

A scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.

You love righteousness but hate wickedness.
therefore, God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.

All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia,
from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad.

Daughters of kings are among your honored women, at your right hand is the royal bride in gold
of Ophir.

Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear, Forget your people and your father's house.

The king is enthralled with your beauty,
honor him, for he is your lord.

The daughter of Tyre will come with a gift,
men of wealth will seek your favor.

All glorious is the princess within her chamber,
her gold is interwoven with gold.

In embroidered garments she is led to the king,
her virgin companions follow her and are brought to you.

They are led in with joy and gladness,
they enter the palace of the king.

Your sons will take the place of your fathers,
you will make them princes
throughout the land.

I will perpetuate your memory through all generations,
therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.

"God is Our Refuge and Strength"

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever - present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way.
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.

God is within her, she will not fall,
God will help her at break of day.

Nations are in an uproar, kingdoms fall,
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The LORD Almighty is with us,
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah

Come and see the works of the LORD,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.

He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth,
he breaks bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields with fire.

Be still, and know that I am God.

I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.

The LORD Almighty is with us,
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah

Wonder what these songs sounded like in their original language?

You could ask a Jew who speaks Hebrew and he could recite them in Hebrew for you, Editec. I believe the translation you are reading was the one the Holy Spirit desired to be used in the bible as the Holy Spirit is the author and revelator of all Scripture. That includes the Psalms. Everything David wrote came a heart communing with God and back to God in prayer. The writings are inspired by God.

I find the KJV is far more beautiful although I do find it good to write some of them in the NIV so it is plainer to those who are not familiar with KJV. It can be more difficult to understand at times. I did choose in the last one to write my tongue is the pen of a ready writer rather than a skillful writer as that was the KJV instead of the NIV. Sometimes I find the NIV has lost words in translation concerning the Psalms such as in Psalm 17 which is why I chose to write both KJV and NIV. So you can see the difference between the two. :eusa_angel:

The Lord Shall Subdue All Nations

Psalm 47 - KJV

O clap ye hands, all ye people, shout unto God with the voice of triumph.
For the LORD most high is terrible, he is a great King over all the earth.

He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.
He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved.

God is gone up with a shout,
the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.

Sing praises to God, sing praises unto our King, sing praises.

For God is the King of all the earth, sing ye praises with undertanding.

God reigned over the heathen, God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham,
for the shields of the earth belong unto God, he is greatly exalted.

The Praise of Mount Zion

Psalm 48

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised.
In the city of God, in the mountain of his holiness, of the whole earth,
is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.

God is known in her palaces for a refuge.
For, lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.

They saw it, and so they marvelled, they were troubled, and hasted away.

Fear took hold upon them there, and pain, as a woman in travail.
Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.

As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts,
in the city of our God, God will establish it for ever.

We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.
According to thy name, O God, so is thy praise unto the ends of the earth,
thy right hand is full of righteousness.

Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.

Walk about Zion, and go round about her, tell the towers thereof.

Mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces that ye may tell it to the generation following.

For this God is our God for ever and ever,
he will be our guide even unto death.
