Psalms - The Book of Prayer, Praise & Meditation

Riches Cannot Redeem

Psalm 49

Hear this, all ye people, give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world.

Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
My mouth shall speak of wisdom,
and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.

I will incline mine ear to a parable,
I will open my dark saying upon the harp.

Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil,
when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about.

They that trust in their wealth,
and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches.

None of them can by any means redeem their brother, nor give to God a ransom for him.

For the redemption of their soul is precious,
and it ceaseth forever.

That he should still live for ever and not see corruption.
Fo he seeth that wise men die,
likewise the fool and the brutish person perish,
and leave their wealth to others.

Their inward thought is, that their house shall continue forever and their dwelling places to all generations, they call their lands after their own names.

Nevertheless man being in honor abideth not, he is like the beasts that perish.

This their way is their folly, yet their posterity approve their sayings.
Selah
Like sheep they are laid in the grave,
death shall feed on them, and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning,
and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.

But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave,
for he shall receive me.

Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house increased.
For he when he dieth he shall carry nothing away, his glory shall not descend after him.

Though while he lived he blessed his soul, and me will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.

He shall go to the generation of his fathers, they shall never see light.
Man that is in honour, and understandeth not,
is like the beasts that perish.

The Lord Shall Judge All People

Psalm 50

The might God, even the LORD, hat spoken, and called the earth
from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.

Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.

Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence, a fire shall devour,
before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.

He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.

Gather my saints together unto me, those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.
And the heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God is judge himself. Selah.

Hear, O my people, and I will speak: O Israel, and I will testify against thee, I am God, even thy God.

I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings,
to have been continually before me.

I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.
For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

I know all the fowls of the mountains and the wild beasts of the fields are mine.
If I were hungry, I would not tell thee,
for the world is mine, and the fullness thereof.

Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?

Offer unto God thanksgiving and pay thy vows unto the Most High:

And call upon me in the day of trouble, I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

But unto the wicked God saith, What has thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?

Seeing thou hatest instruction, and casteth my words behind thee.

When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentest with him, and has been partaker with adulterers.
Thou givest thou mouth to evil and thy tongue frameth deceit.

Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother, thou slanderest thou own mother's son.

THese things hast thou done, and I kept silence, thou thoughtest that I was altogether such as one of thyself, but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.

Now consider this, yet that forget God, let I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me, and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew thee
the salvation of God.

"God is Our Refuge and Strength"

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
an ever - present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way.
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
the holy place where the Most High dwells.

God is within her, she will not fall,
God will help her at break of day.

Nations are in an uproar, kingdoms fall,
he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The LORD Almighty is with us,
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah

Come and see the works of the LORD,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.

He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth,
he breaks bow and shatters the spear,
he burns the shields with fire.

Be still, and know that I am God.

I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.

The LORD Almighty is with us,
the God of Jacob is our fortress.
Selah

Be Still And Know that I am God........... This is about Prayer. To do something different I'm adding an excerpt from Jeanne Guyon's book on prayer from her teachings on Prayer.. Jeanne lived back in the 1500's but her teachings on how to pray are timeless and this is a good one that was from her book Experiencing the Depths of God through Prayer. I prefer teachers on prayer from the 1500's and 1600's and some later but there isn't anyone alive today I am impressed with on the matter of prayer other than Michael Boldea Jr. and one or two others who have never published. This one is excellent and packed with wisdom.

Jeanne wrote about prayer:

God said to David, Be still and know that I am God. We, the created, sometimes become so infatuated with love and attachment to our own works that we walk in disbelief unless we can feel, know, and distinguish the completed work. God's operations, His manner, and His swiftness are simply unable to be discerned. As the Creator's workings abound more and more with us, they will absorb our self-efforts. It seems as if the stars shine more brightly before the sun rises and gradually vanish as the light advances. they have not really become invisible. A greater light has simply absorbed the lesser light.

This is also the case with your self-effort in prayer. Since God's light is so much greater, it absorbs our little flickers of activity. They will grow faint and eventually disappear until all self-effort to experience God is indistinguishable. Those who have experienced God have done so because God had first chosen to meet with them. No amount of self-effort will bring you into his presence. The fullness of grace will still the activity of self. Therefore for it is of the utmost importance that you remain as silent as possible. Do not force into this beautiful act of grace the multiplicity of self. God's presence is not a stronghold to to be taken by force or violence. His is a kingdom of peace, which can only be attained through love. God demands nothing exrtaordinary or difficult. On the contrary, He is greatly pleased with simple, childlike conduct.

The most glorious attainments in prayer are those which are the most easily reached. If you want to reach the ocean, sail a boat down the river. Eventually, without exertion or effort, you will find greater waters. Are you now ready to find God? If your answer is yes you will surely find the object of your affection. Soon you will find your own experience will carry you infinitely beyond what my few words have taught you. What is it you fear? Why don't you instantly cast yourself into the arms of Jesus, who extended his arms on the cross so that He might embrace you? What risk do your run in abandoning yourself wholly to Him? Oh, Jesus will not deceive you. He will only bestow upon you a greater abundance than you have ever hoped for. - Madame Guyon

*A great little book that is easy to read on the subject of prayer. "Experiencing the depths of God through prayer" by Guyon and the other is Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence. *I typed this from my bible - devotional ( quoting Jeanne Guyon ) - no link. All of the Psalms are excellent prayers of praise, petitions for help from God, prayers of repentance, healing, forgiveness, restoration..
Praying the Psalms - excellent prayers - use them for prayer & and encouraging yourself in the Lord.

Confession and Forgiveness Prayer

Psalm 51

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness,
according unto the multitudes of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.

Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight,
that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Behold thou desirest truth in the inward parts
and in the hidden part thou shall make me to know wisdom.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean, wash me and I shall be a whiter than snow.

Make me to hear joy and gladness,
that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from thy holy presence,, and take not thy holy spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Then will I teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

Deliver me from bloodyguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation,
and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
O Lord, open thou my lips and my mouth shall shew forth praise.

For thou desirest not sacrifice, else would I give it, thou delightest not in sacrifice.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion, build thou the walls of Jerusalem,
then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness,
with burnt offering and whole burnt offering,
then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

The Lord Shall Judge the Deceitful

Psalm 52

Why do you boast of evil, you mighty man?
Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?

Your tongue plots destruction,
it is like a razor,
you who practice deceit.

You love evil rather than good,
falsehood rather than speaking truth.

You love every harmful word, O you deceitful tongue!

Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:

He will snatch you up and tear you from your tent,
he will uproot you from the land of the living.

The righteous will see and fear, they will laugh at his saying,
Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth
and grew strong destroying others!

But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God,
I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever.

I will praise you forever for what you have done,
in your name I will hope,
for your name is good

I will praise you in the presence of your saints.

A Portrait of the Godless

Psalm 53

The fool says in his heart,
There is no God.

They are corrupt, and their ways are vile,
there is no one who does good.

God looks down from heaven on the sons of men
to see if there are any who understand,
and who seek God.

Everyone has turned away,
they have together become corrupt
there is no one who does good,
not even one.

Will the evildoers never learn -
those who devour my people as men eat bread
and who do not call on God?

There they were, overwhelmed with dread,
where there was nothing to dread.

God scattered the bones of those who attacked you,
you put them to shame for God despised them.

Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!

When God restores the fortunes of his people,
let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!

The Lord is our Helper

Psalm 54

Save me, O God, by your name,
vindicate me by your might.

Hear my prayer, O God,
listen to the words of my mouth.

Strangers are attacking me,
ruthless men seek my life-
men without regard for God.
Selah
Surely God is my help,
the LORD is the one who sustains me.

Let evil recoil on those who slander me,
in your faithfulness destroy them.

I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you,
I will praise your name, O LORD, for it is good.

For he has delivered me from all my troubles,
and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.

Cast Thy Burden on the LORD

Psalm 55

Listen to my prayer, O God,
do not ignore my plea,
hear me and answer me.

My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught
at the voice of the enemy,
at the stares of the wicked,
for they bring down suffering upon me
and revile me in their anger.

My heart is in anguish within me,
the terrors that assail me.

Fear and trembling have beset me,
horror has overwhelmed me.

I said, Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!

I would fly away and be at rest - I would flee far away and stay in the desert,
I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm.

Confuse the wicked, O Lord,
confound their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city.

Day and night they prowl about on its walls,
malice and abuse are within it.

Destructive forces are at work in the city,
threats and lies never leave its streets.

If an enemy were insulting me,
I could endure it,
if a foe were raising himself against me,
I could hide from him.

But it is you, a man like myself,
my companion, my close friend,
with whom I once enjoyed sweet fellowship,
as we walked with the throng at
the house of God.

Let death take my enemies by
surprise,
let them go down alive to the grave,
for evil finds lodging among them.

But I call to God,
and the LORD saves me.

Evening, morning and noon,
I cry in distress,
and he hears my voice.

He ransoms me unharmed
from the battle waged against me,
even though many oppose me.

God, who is enthroned forever, will hear them and afflict them.
Selah
men who never change their ways and have no fear of God.

My companion attacks his friends,
he violates his covenant,
His speech is smooth as butter,
yet war is in his heart,
his words are more soothing than oil,
yet they are drawn swords.

Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you,
he will never let the righteous fall.
But you, O God, will bring down the wicked into the pit of corruption,
bloodthirsty and deceitful men will not live out half their days.

But as for me, I trust in you.

Fears in the Midst of Trials

Psalm 56

Be merciful on me, O God, for men hotly pursue me,
all day long they press their attack.

My slanderers pursue me all the day long,
many are attacking me in their pride.

When I am afraid,
I will trust in you.

In God, whose words I praise,
in God I trust, I will not be afraid.

What can mortal man do to me?

All day long they twist my words,
they are always plotting to harm me.

They conspire, they lurk, they watch my steps,
eager to take my life.

On no account let them escape, in your anger, O God,
bring down the nations.

Record my lament,
list my tears on your scroll -
are they not in your record?

Then my enemies will turn back when I call for help.
By this I will know that God is for me.

In God, whose word I praise,
in the LORD, whose word I praise -
in God I trust - I will not be afraid.

What can man do to me?

I am under vows to you, O God,
I will present my thank offerings to you.

For you have delivered me from death
and my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before God
in the light of life.

Prayers in the Midst of Perils

Psalm 57

Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me,
for in you my soul takes refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
until the disaster has passed.

I cry out to God Most High,
to God, who fulfills his purpose for me.

He sends from heaven and saves me,
rebuking those who hotly pursue me.
Selah
God sends his love
and his faithfulness.

I am in the midst of lions,
I lie among ravenous beasts - men whose teeth are spears and arrows,
whose tongues are sharp swords.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens,
let your glory be over all the earth.

They spread a net for my feet -
I was bowed down in distress.

They dug a pit in my path -
but they have fallen into it themselves.

My heart is steadfast, O God,
my heart is steadfast.
I will sing and make music.

Awake, my soul!
Awake, harp and lyre!
I will awaken at dawn.

I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations,
I will sing of you among the peoples.

For great is your love, reaching to the heavens,
your faithfulness reaches to the skies.

Be exalted, O God, above the heavens
let your glory be over all the earth.

Wicked Judges In the Land Shall be Judged - NIV

Psalm 58

Do you rulers indeed speak justly?
Do you judge uprightly among men?
No, in your heart you devise injustice,
and your hands mete out
violence on the earth.

Even from birth the wicked go astray,
from the womb they are wayward and speak lies.

Their venom is like the venom of a snake,
like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
that will will not heed the tune of the charmer.
however skillful the enchanter may be.

Break the teeth in their mouths,
O God,
tear out, O LORD, the fangs of the lions!
Let them vanish like water that flows away,
when they draw the bow, let their arrows be hunted.

Like a slug melting away as it moves along,
like a stillborn child, may they not see the sun.

Before your pots can feel the heat of,
the thorns -
whether they be green or dry - the wicked will be swept away.

The righteous will be glad when they are avenged,
when they bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.

Then men will say, Surely the righteous still are rewarded,
surely there is a God who judges the earth.

Do Not Destroy

(A Psalm from David when Saul had sent men to watch David's house in order to kill him. )

Psalm 59

Deliver me from my enemies, O God, protect me from those who rise up against me.
Deliver me from evil doers and save me from bloodthirsty men.

See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, O Lord. I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.

Arise to help me, look on my plight! O Lord God Almighty, the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish all the nations, show no mercy to wicked traitors.

They return at evening snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. See what they spew from their mouths - they spew out swords from their lips, and they say, "Who can hear us?"

But you, O Lord, laugh at them, you scoff at those nations. O my Strength, I watch for you, you , O God, are my fortress, my loving God.

God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me. But do not kill them, O Lord, our shield, or my people will forget. In your might make them wander about, and bring them down. For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter, consume them in wrath, consume them till they are no more.

Then it will be known to the ends of the earth, that God rules over Jacob. Selah.

They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. They wander about for food and how if not satisfied. But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love, for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.

O my Strength, I sing praise to you, you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.

Psalm 60 A PRAYER FOR DELIVERANCE OF THE NATION

O God, thou hast cast us off, thou has scattered us, thou hast been displeased; O turn thyself to us again. Thou has made the earth to tremble, thou has broken it; heal the branches thereof; for it shaketh.

Thou hast shewed thy people hard things; thou hast made us to drink the wine of astonishment.

Thous has given a banner to them that fear thee, that it may be displayed because of truth. That thy beloved may be delivered; save with thy right hand and hear me.

God hath spoken in his holiness; I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth. Gilead is mine and Manasseh is mine and Ephraim also is the strength of mine head, Judah is my lawgiver. Moab is my washpot, over Edom will I cast my shoe, Philistia, triumph thou because of me. Who will bring me into the strong city? Who will lead me into Edom?

Will not thou, O God, which hadst cast us off? And thou, O God which didst not go out with our armies. Give us help from trouble for vain is the help of man. Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

Psalm 61 - A prayer for the overwhelmed - pray this prayer when you feel overwhelmed by any situation - it is a wonderful prayer.

Hear my cry, O God, attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry to thee. When my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou has been a shelter to me, and a strong tower from the enemy.

I will abide in the tabernacle forever. I will trust in the covert of thy wings. For thou, O God, hast heard my vows; thou hast given me the heritage of those that fear thy name.

Thou wilt prolong the king's life; and his years as many generations. He shall abide before God for ever; O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him. So will I sing praise unto thy name forever, that I may daily perform my vows.

I need to get the link to this song as it didn't transfer to the new board! I found the link to Psalms! I thank Jesus for it! This book isn't completed yet but God willing it will be soon!

Today we pick up where we left off! The next Psalm? Psalm 62! What timing! Glory to God! I love it! No teacher compares to the Spirit of God - He is absolutely MAGNIFICENT!

Psalm - Wait upon God

TRULY my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.

He is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

How long will ye imagine mischief against a man?

ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.

They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly.
Selah.
My soul wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be moved.

In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is our refuge for us. Selah.

Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

Trust not in oppression and become not vain in robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.
Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.

Next Psalm.........Psalm 63

Psalm 63 - Thirst for God - This is the Word of the LORD - this is His Word and the prayer of the righteous!

O GOD, thou art my God, early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.
To see thy power and thy glory so as I have seen thee in the sanctuary.

Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.

My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness: and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:

When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches.
Because thou hast been my help, therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.
My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
But those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth.

They shall fall by the sword: they shall be a portion for the foxes.

But the king shall rejoice in God; everyone that sweareth by him shall glory: the mouth of them that speaketh lies shall be stopped.

Let us worship the LORD in spiritual songs, worship, reading the Psalms!

God inhabits the praises of His People!
