I seldom come to the top part of the board, but I have some words to share.
As I drove to work this morning, I heard a song from a band I really like.
I enjoyed about the first minute of the song until I listened to what he was
saying. The song is called B.Y.O.B. which I recently found out means Bring
Your Own Bullets. The artist is System of a Down. The lyrics are VERY\
straight forward and express the message of Anti-Bush/war loud and clear. It
reminded me a lot of “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath. Some of the lyrics go on
to say, ah hell, here’s the whole song.

My god is of bible blood, with pointed ears.
    Victorious Victorious steel,
    can your spending kneel?
    Marching forward hypocritic
    and hypnotic computers,
    you depend on our protection,
yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth!

    Lalalalalalalalalala Ooooooh!

    Everybody's going to the party
    have a real good time,
    dancing in the desert
    blowing up the sunshine.
    Kneeling roses
    disappearing into Moses' dry mouth,
    breaking into Fort Knox
    stealing our intentions!
    Every city gripped in oil
    crying freedom!
    Handed to obsoletion,
still you feed us lies from the tablecloth

    Lalalalalalalalalalaa Ooooooh!

    Everybody's going to the party
    have a real good time,
    dancing in the desert
    blowing up the sunshine,
Everybody is going to the party
    have a real good time
    dancing in the desert
    blowing up the sunshine!

    Blast off! It's party time!
And we all live in a fascist nation!
    Blast off! It's party time!
And where the fuck are you?!

    Where the fuck are you?
    Where the fuck are you?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why don't presidents fight the war?
Why do they always send the poor?
Why do they always send the poor?

The more I listened to the song,
the more I began to think about all of the negative anti-war/politician music
is circulating through the music industry today. Such artists as Green Day
with their new album “American Idiot”, or Bon Jovi with his album “This left
feels right.” Public Enemy and Eminem have even joined the war on Bush. Don’t get me wrong, music has expressed so many times a Pro American
stance with entertainers like Bob Hope and Kid Rock, but the hippies are all
coming out of the wood works now. I remember a time when every house\
on my block had an American flag in the yard and Toby Keith in the cd player.
That’s all being traded in now for tie dyed shirts and The Dixie chicks. This all
saddens me as music is my very soul. It gives me that feeling in my stomach
that I used to get when my dad would say “I’m disappointed in you son”.
With this being said, where is the music industry going? Who decides where it
goes? I wouldn’t think (according to the election) that they would let the
public decide what airs on the radio, that would make sense. I’ve always
been aware of how shady the music industry is, but this marks a new low for
    me.
Why can’t we have a music video channel that plays videos?
Why do overpaid exec's get to choose the music I want to hear on the radio? Why is anti-American music flooding our airwaves?
Bonus question, Why are a lot of these artist not originally American?

You know, I went over this rant in my head at lunch and it sounded so much
better. I know everyone has the freedom of speech (Hell I fought to defend their rights), but how far will it go? Is their goal to influence those "uneducated" Americans that don't care to learn the facts? My wife
is one of these people. She refused to vote this last election cause she really hates Bush (reason unknown to even her) and she didn't think it would be fair
to vote being so uneducated. On a side note she also hates Reagan for reasons she doesn't even know. I guess what I'm getting at is, that
eventually these people will listen to something. The next "John" to come
    along might actually get elected.
Unfortunately, I have a terrible way with words, and can't type how I actually feel. I know many of you share some of these views, and I
would like some more input. What do you say?

She hated Bush so didn't vote? She must have hated Kerry equally.

She just admits that her hatred for Bush is not reason enough for
her to vote against him. She didn't know shit about Kerry.

Joker, I know how you feel. SOAD is a very socialist/populist group. Great music, terrible politics. I feel the same about RATM. My only suggestion is to go pop Kid Rock into your stereo!

It all started back in the 60's. It has been carried on through the years and being refreshed for the latest war. Liberals run the music business along with most other media. The songs are meant to place thoughts into the heads of those that listen to them and re-enforce those thoghts through repetive listening. A catchy tune attracts the listener. Repetative hate mongering becomes a truth. It can be very suttle and still undermining.

Music has a major influencial impact on this country and how people think. And too much of it supports the negative.

System and Rage are the 2 most extreme examples i can think of where popular music is used as a political weapon. Almost everyone of their songs is that way. Its good music but terrible lyrics. I used to listen when i was like 13. I never knew what their lyrics meant till i was around 16 or 17. Then i was sorta turned off to Rage. system of a down i listen to cause its loud music and not all of their songs are political like rages. But some you just have to turn off because of the misguidedness.
