Beck: Help us restore traditional American values

WASHINGTON – Conservative commentator Glenn Beck and tea party champion Sarah Palin appealed Saturday to a vast, predominantly white crowd on the National Mall to help restore traditional American values and honor Martin Luther King's message. Civil rights leaders who accused the group of hijacking King's legacy held their own rally and march.

the irony...when do other crowds get labeled as predominantly this color or ethnicity....especially when talking about king's message where he dreamed one day we would not be judged by the color of our skin, but the content of our character

why was it important to focus on the skin color?
The media is pointing out irony.

Beck wants to "take back" the civil rights movement...what does that mean, and what does it mean that most of his followers are white?

Without 'whites', there would be no 'civil rights movement'..... You get what the whole movement was about, don't you? It wasn't about race, it was about rights. MLK didn't talk about special treatment for blacks, he talked about judging on the content of character. Jeez, Ravi.... Don't you ever think?

Percentage of White Americans is 79.6% (according to the US Census Bureau 2009)

So, if the crowd was 87% white, then 13% were minorities. If Beck is this evil race baiter, 'spewing hate' yadda, yadda, yadda, why did so many non Whites turn up? Did they get lost on the way to the race baiters rally next door?
What race baiters rally next door?

Sharpton.... he's made a good living out of race baiting.

Seen any pics of his 'reclaiming the dream' rally? 200/300 blacks. No accusations of racism for that?
Please describe what happened at the other rally that could be described as race baiting. I have seen clips of it and it seemed a peaceful march mimicking MLK's original march and speech.

You avoided both questions.

It means that Becks 'followers' meet the national average. A white majority, and a minority of minorities as it were. That ain't rocket science.

Beck is an idiot.

But a very good point about the media coverage

when a bunch of white people try to usurp one of the most famous moments in the civil rights movement, the color of the participants becomes noteworthy.

still waiting to hear what honor was 'lost' and what was reclaimed.

Except that King's message was to ignore color. So who cares when what color they were?

Perhaps Martin's message is lost on the left. Maybe they can't get past the whole color thing.

oh... duh... i'm still having coffee cup number one.

sorry.

again... for the upteenth time, what honor was 'lost'? 'and what did this bunch of white people need to reclaim besides the right to say the word n****r whenever they want to?

Which means that there is no real perception of equality among different ethnic groups.

Where were the Asians? The Latinos? The Blacks? The Native Americans? The group was made up of Beck's audience. Pointing out that they are mainly white is just pointing out a fact.

No honor was lost. Beck is a looney-tunes asshole.

I was commenting mainly on the media coverage.

That's the question of the day.

That's the question of the day.

seems to have been the question for the last week. no one has been honest enough to answer it.

but the answer is... a day before the civil rights movement.

these same people would have been standing in georgia blocking the universities to protect 'traditional values'.

they can like that or not.

Let's play 'do the math' ....

As a ballpark median, the attendees at the rally was 100,000.

87% of those attending (according to media sources) were 'white'. 13% were non white. How many non white people were at the rally? 13,000

75.6% of Americans are white (according to the National Census Bureau). So, in point of fact - according to the numbers - Becks rally was not that far off the national average.
