Pay for the military

Much has been made by those on the right here on USMB, about supposed lefties who are either down and out or are living paycheck to paycheck, and of course what a bad thing this is, and how only those on the left, who RELY on the Federal government for their very being, would live such a life.

With this in mind, why was so much made about how the Federal government shutdown would hurt military families and how such a shut dwon could make military families destitute and possibly lose their homes, etc. Are military families lefties? All of them? Really?

Your analogy is preposterous and frankly, dishonest. Our military contribute to the well-being of ALL of us, this nation as a whole, more so than any other segment of society. And they do it thanklessly while being labeled "baby killers" by the far-left whackaloons and dip shits like the psychotics at Westboro.

Knock it off.

Our military are PAID by us taxpayers to "contribute to the well-being of ALL of us". And they do it voluntarily.

For the same reason that $250,000 a year is "middle class" when it comes to taxes, but $100,000 a year pay for a teacher is too high.

$100,000? Everyone bitches when they hear a teacher makes $50,000.

I did not see a conversation about living paycheck to paycheck. I can't imagine why anyone would not complain that there are our troops FORCED to continue in COMBAT-- forced to die for their country without pay. AND OR forced to worry about how their families rent would not get paid and they would go without food and in worrying are far from mission ready. They would not be focused on the job at hand ( WAR) but on if their family was okay and that would put them in a situation where they were got themselves killed and or their unit.

FORCED??? What part of "volunteer military" are you struggling with?

They "volunteer" to serve. Once their service begins until their enlistment is completed, very little of what they do could be described as being "voluntary."

They are "commanded" by their superiors and obey their commander's "orders" 24/7 when their duty requires that.

What do we call people who have no choice about how many hours they must work in addition to the conditions in which the must do it, and must continue under orders on pain of severe punishment whether or not they are paid?

Ahh so you are saying that a the military can just walk away any time they want? Anyone in Iraq, etc can just walk off the job and perhaps get some doctor to write them a fake sick note?

Are you trying to say that our military recruiters are not doing a good enough job of letting these VOLUNTEERS know what they will be in for when they sign up?

I just spoke to an active Marine leader over a recent holiday and he told me that the active military is NOT mostly conservative.

One of you is lying. And I don't think it's the active Marine leader.

Not down on the military. Just trying to figure out why they are not subject to the same brow beating that the right wingers on here give others who may live paycheck to paycheck. Why was it so important to ensure these budget challenged individuals got their paychecks, when those non-military folks who live paycheck to paycheck are so easily disregarded by right wingers on this board?

I don't believe that anyone who is working for a living has been browbeaten. Those who expect a handout so they don't have to work maybe....

But why not guarantee our troops of whom many are in war zones that we will make sure their families at home are taken care of while they are dodging bullets and explosions of various types? God knows it wasn't easy for my family and it certainly can't be any easier today.

Ahhhhh....here it comes. "because they are dodging bullets". Isn't that their chosen profession? We have a 100% VOLUNTEER military, which by the way has some damn good benefits that go along with it. They are simply DOING THEIR JOBS, the same as everyone esle. Why shoul dthey be guaranteed ANYTHING more than anyone else?

For the same reason that police, fire and other essential service providers are exempt from any shutdown, so should our military be. They may be simply doing their jobs, but they are the most valuable jobs in the country. And they should be treated as such.

Well, I know literally hundreds of Marines. I have yet to meet one who is not conservative. So, are you lying? Maybe, maybe not. I guess it just depends on who you speak to. But... given that you are an idiot, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this 'Marine' you 'spoke' to was in your head.

Still no growth yet huh CG?

Still slinging immature insults at the drop of a dime huh?

Well...I'll maintain some hope for you yet.

Don't worry...you'll be OK.

More valuable than the people who cut their checks who were going to be furloughed in the event of a government shutdown?

If your point is that the military is sucking the life out of our economy, I'm 100% on board with that sentiment.

I don't blame the military personnel for that, of course.

But I do get rather tired of people who are NOT players in the capitalist economy (the military is pure socialist) waxing poetic about how much they LOVE capitalism.

These boys live in a social workers paradise and yet they have the unmitigate gall to lecutre the rest of us about how good capitalism works.

If they love this perverted form of capitalism we are currently enjoying so damned much, they ought to try to living with it.

I mean how many recruits going into boot camp today do you think could find a job in the civilian sector that pays nearly so well?

Not 10% of them, kids.

Starting salaries in the military are very generous given the lack of skills these boys are taking into the service with them.

No growth? Coming from one of the resident 2 year olds, that's very funny.

I'm not worried. I am OK. You, on the other hand, pretend you're Mr Civil when in fact, you are as bad as anyone else. Difference between us, I don't pretend to be something I'm not.

Let's see..... guys who risk their lives to protect their fellow Americans.... pen-pushers who push paper.... yea, that's a tough call.

I wonder how many people in the military are part of the (according to Willow Tree) tit sucking 50% of Americans who don't pay taxes?

Cool. So I guess according to you, ensuring the military gets their paychecks is NOT as important as some on the right suggested....

No.
We have a friend that makes over 100K as a teacher.
She arrives at work at 8 am, teaches 4 classes as she has 20 years in and works about 30 hours a week. She gets 11 weeks of paid vacation and a benefit package worth about 15K. She will retire at under age 60 and her pension will average 1.2million over the life of her retirement years. Her pay is now a little over $100 an hour for her job pay plus current benefits.
If that is not overpaid no job is.

And they learn the necessary skills very very fast. What civilian job will train you 24/7 to give you all the needed skills and knowledge?

I haven't seen our military labeled "baby-killers" since Viet Nam and Nixon's day....where have YOU heard it lately?
