Pay for the military

Much has been made by those on the right here on USMB, about supposed lefties who are either down and out or are living paycheck to paycheck, and of course what a bad thing this is, and how only those on the left, who RELY on the Federal government for their very being, would live such a life.

With this in mind, why was so much made about how the Federal government shutdown would hurt military families and how such a shut dwon could make military families destitute and possibly lose their homes, etc. Are military families lefties? All of them? Really?

I wonder how many people in the military are part of the (according to Willow Tree) tit sucking 50% of Americans who don't pay taxes?

Not many. Some of the lower enlisted maybe don't pay Federal income tax. But most do. Hell, I even paid state income tax for 22 years even though I wasn't in the state.

More valuable than the people who cut their checks who were going to be furloughed in the event of a government shutdown?

Let's see..... guys who risk their lives to protect their fellow Americans.... pen-pushers who push paper.... yea, that's a tough call.

Cool. So I guess according to you, ensuring the military gets their paychecks is NOT as important as some on the right suggested....

Don't 'guess', it makes you look stupid.

You asked me a question. I answered it. It's not my fault if you can't ask the right question, you fucking idiot.

Have I told you lately that you are an idiot?

FORCED??? What part of "volunteer military" are you struggling with?

They "volunteer" to serve. Once their service begins until their enlistment is completed, very little of what they do could be described as being "voluntary."

They are "commanded" by their superiors and obey their commander's "orders" 24/7 when their duty requires that.

What do we call people who have no choice about how many hours they must work in addition to the conditions in which the must do it, and must continue under orders on pain of severe punishment whether or not they are paid?

Are you trying to say that our military recruiters are not doing a good enough job of letting these VOLUNTEERS know what they will be in for when they sign up?

They don't, you know. They really don't.

It is also not MY fault that your answers make you look like an ass....

I just spoke to an active Marine leader over a recent holiday and he told me that the active military is NOT mostly conservative.

One of you is lying. And I don't think it's the active Marine leader.

I would say it is mostly conservative but while someone like Ollie probably thinks the split is something like 80% conservative, 20% liberal...the reality is more like 60% conservative, 40% liberal.

Some have a hard time imagining liberals in the military....just observe when liberal vets such as myself, seawytch, noose4 and zona are on....our military service is questioned again and again and again. They can't handle the reality that not all military are hard core conservatives. That liberals actually serve. That liberals don't go screaming away from guns and service to country.

Really? I don't recall ever having such conversations.

But why are you down on the troops? Fact is most anyone who is used to a certain paycheck to suddenly have it cut off could be rather devastating. I had my income cut by nearly 2/3s while waiting for disability, the only bill that really got paid was the mortgage. We spent $9 on Christmas that year. Thankfully it was the Mrs and I, one son who was 30 and my Brother. No kids... And just FYI the active military is mostly Conservative.

Not down on the military. Just trying to figure out why they are not subject to the same brow beating that the right wingers on here give others who may live paycheck to paycheck. Why was it so important to ensure these budget challenged individuals got their paychecks, when those non-military folks who live paycheck to paycheck are so easily disregarded by right wingers on this board?

By "others" I suppose you mean public employees who have unionized so they can act as a voting block (PAC) to elect the same officials with whom they collectively bargain for salary and benefits.

While you're no doubt one of the sharper meatballs to have noticed that the military is composed of public employees, the fact that they haven't organized a union to hold taxpayers by the balls seems to have escaped your notice.

Hope I've drawn a clear enough picture for you to "figure out why" the military isn't treated the same way as a bunch of bitches.

If your point is that the military is sucking the life out of our economy, I'm 100% on board with that sentiment.

I don't blame the military personnel for that, of course.

But I do get rather tired of people who are NOT players in the capitalist economy (the military is pure socialist) waxing poetic about how much they LOVE capitalism.

These boys live in a social workers paradise and yet they have the unmitigate gall to lecutre the rest of us about how good capitalism works.

If they love this perverted form of capitalism we are currently enjoying so damned much, they ought to try to living with it.

I mean how many recruits going into boot camp today do you think could find a job in the civilian sector that pays nearly so well?

Not 10% of them, kids.

Starting salaries in the military are very generous given the lack of skills these boys are taking into the service with them.

And they learn the necessary skills very very fast. What civilian job will train you 24/7 to give you all the needed skills and knowledge?

What exactly are those recruits learning while they sleep in their bunks, again?

Sleep in their bunks? you know less than zero about the Military.

Had you been paying attention, you would already know that I abhor unions in the private and public sectors. Since you haven't been, your assumption is incorrect.
