Yet Earth Day organizers too often go beyond promoting that simple message and use the occasion as a platform for advancing a political ideology. Global warming, for example, is a frequent topic on Earth Day. Schools tend to echo the message of global warming alarmists, claiming that man is causing temperatures to rise with potentially catastrophic consequences for our planet and mankind. Many schools even show Al Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth. That film may have won an Academy Award, but it is widely recognized as propaganda, with a judge in the United Kingdom finding that it grossly exaggerates even the most dire predictions about global warming's potential harm.

Instead of adding to this alarmism, schools should provide students with some balance by presenting evidence from scientists who don't believe we are experiencing unprecedented warming or that warming is caused by man's activities.

It's the deniers that make it a political football. AGW is a purely scientific question, but since those who don't believe have lost the scientific argument, they have to make it a political one. Everyone knows the properties of CO2. Everyone knows its been going up for the last couple of hundred years. Therefore, if the trend contines, warming is inevitable. It's that simple logic the deniers cannot shoot down, so they have to go political and bash Gore, misrepresent what scientists say and distract us with irrelevancies about what happened millions of years ago.

And completely ignore the revelant events in geologic history. The Younger Dryas, the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum, and the Permian Triassic Extinction are all very relevant as to what happens when you have a very rapid climate change.

These people seem to think that just because we are the cause of the rapid runup of GHGs at present, that the laws of physics will exempt us from the consequences.
