Exploding ‘Donald Trump Baby’ image blows up online, even if not everyone gets the historical reference

“Knowledge of American History Rapidly Becoming History,” warned a National Association of Scholars headline a few years ago.

And yet history manages to stay front and center in the present.

A minor example from this eventful week: a year-old black-and-white image of the exploding “Trump Baby” balloon is circulating far and wide in online memes. It’s a mocking reference to the actions by President Donald Trump that have led to the U.S. House of Representatives launching an impeachment inquiry.

It is also, as any history nerd knows, a playful reimagining of one of the most famous photos of the 20th century.

In 1937, the German zeppelin Hindenburg suddenly went up in flames as it prepared to dock in New Jersey. The dramatic disaster, which killed more than 30 people, was caught on film and quickly landed in newspapers and newsreels around the world. The tragedy became so well-known so fast that it effectively ended the passenger-airship industry.
