Clearly they blocked off the statue out of concern that it would be spray painted with graffiti or otherwise vandalized, given who would be attending the rally.
Smart move when you think about it.

Did you know MLK was a republican and that he held a high regard for our founding fathers?
Did you know MLK was a republican and that he held a high regard for our founding fathers?
Stop the lies already, MLK was not a Republican.
It should come as no surprise that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Republican. In that era, almost all black Americans were Republicans. Why? From its founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party until today, the Republican Party has championed freedom and civil rights for blacks. And as one pundit so succinctly stated, the Democrat Party is as it always has been, the party of the four S's: slavery, secession, segregation and now socialism.
Is it just me or does anyone else feeling like were waiting for blacks to grow up?

Wow! This thread has really grieved me. Was it wrong to cover the statue of Washington? Yes. He was the father of our country. Not of just whites, but all of us. There has been racist rants on this thread, from both sides. We have to get over it.
The blacks today have no bone to pick. They are not the slaves who were treated so inhumanely and dogs lead a better life. It was their ancestors. Have they even given thanks to their ancestors for what they endured?
And for those who think that blacks are beneath the whites, you are just proving they aren't by your own tasteless rhetoric.
It's time we all thank God that this country finally saw the errors of our ways and rectified the injustices we handed out and we have a better nation for it. We have black inventors, authors, scientists, educators, judges and just the best that whites too have supplied our nation.
And it is time we work and live together as one nation understanding history but not making political hay out of it. It is the past. It is now lessons to be learned for our futures.
Ok....What does George Washington's ownership of slaves have to do with anything?A country where hopefully it isn't illegal to cover up the statue of a slave holder temporarily when celebrating the birthday of the descendant of slaves.
It isn't illegal. If you want to live here and crap all over the Founding Fathers don't expect it not to ruffle a few feathers.
Washington was a slave owner and holder, why should any black honor on a MLK celebration? I would never honor a slave holder and owner, my point stands, some whites don't care about anyone's humanity except their own.

Did it ever occur to you knee jerk reaction black people that some of the elected officials whom you agree with may in fact be descendants of slave owners while the white conservatives you hate with such vitriol may not have had family in the US before 1900?
You people on the Left are very cute with your selective persecutions.
I read all the nonsense about the wealthy than comes from your side while some of the wealthiest people on Washington and those wealthy elitists in Hollywood get a hall pass.
What horse shit you spew.
You people love to yammer on and on claiming victim status while lashing out at your alleged oppressors. Cram it up your ass.
I am sick and tired of black people running around calling everyone that dares to criticize them a racist while they practice racism with impunity...
Every time one you people plays the race card, I will be there to call you on it.
If it's really racism or race baiting, I am with you 100% ....I hate and denounce racial hatred and bigotry. However, I will not stand by while the race card is played purely for political gain.
If you want allies in the battle vs racism, be genuine about it.
Those people who chose to cover the statue practiced blatant racism and disrespect.
They are closed minded and exclusionary.
MLK Day is not a celebration of "Blacks only"....In fact I have my doubts many black people born in the last 45 years have a clue what Dr.King stood for and what his message was.
I am sick of black people who conveniently forget these words ......"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character".
Unfortunately there are prominent liberal black leaders who have forgotten those words.
These men have fostered a continued distrust between blacks and people of other races. They have enriched themselves by seeing to it that black people are perpetual victims.

Are you too damn retarded to get the point that its absurd for black people to embrace a damn slave owner? How can some of you whites talk about the bad and evils of slavery and then around and celebrate a slave owning president as a "Founding Father" and expect blacks to do the same?
That's just an excuse for classless behavior.Ok....What does George Washington's ownership of slaves have to do with anything?Washington was a slave owner and holder, why should any black honor on a MLK celebration? You do know don't you that he freed his slaves on his death in his will.
Martha kept hers though.
A proud, intelligent and more mature people would have used the statue as a example of how far they have come, without covering it up.
