That is not a liberal or a conservative thing. Plenty of liberals are parents and do not want their children having sex either. The liberals feel that it is better to educate the children BEFORE they start having sex so that they don't fuck up. At least that is what I believe to be the case. I do agree that in some instances, they are taking it WAY too far when it comes to children, but age appropriate sex education is a good thing. You should at least know of the risks to your health, your reputation, etc., before engaging in sex, and a LOT of young do and will at least experiment. Don't tell me you were a virgin in high school.

Now, we could say it is better left to the parents, and I agree that in an ideal situation, that is true. Unfortunately and obviously we have very many parents who aren't willing to talk to their children about such things for whatever reasons.

It's really interesting to see how those in the western culture will work to fit this crime into a context they can understand when it is something they don't want to understand.

The rapist wasn't spared prison because of a misunderstanding of consent. He was spared prison because he comes from a culture that teaches that women are worthless. Rape is only a part of the teaching. He could have killed the child and had the same defense.

Seeing this as a consent problem is incredibly shortsighted.

Times have changed. No longer do we live in tiny little sheltered communities. Teens and young people are exposed to a lot more these days than ever before. They are much more knowledgeable about things though too. A lot of the changes we see are due to technology and easy access to things like pornography and our "sex obsessed" culture. We are bombarded by all things sexual every day, so it only follows that teens and young people are going to be curious about sex. I believe that is mostly natural anyways.

Are we more permissive too? Definitely, but I don't know if that is due to any particular ideology or due to culture and society changing due to technology.

What is Statutory Rape or the Age of Consent in Massachusetts?

The age of consent in Massachusetts is sixteen.
