Mississippi Republicans Want Separate Police Force for White, Black Areas

Mississippi discriminates against Black residents with appointed judges, Justice Department says.

The law creates a new court in part of Jackson with prosecutors appointed by the Mississippi attorney general and a judge appointed by the Mississippi Supreme Court chief justice. The law also authorizes the chief justice to appoint four other judges to work alongside the four elected circuit court judges in Hinds County.

Critics say the law takes away self-governance in Jackson and Hinds County, which are both majority-Black and governed by Democrats. Members of the majority-white and Republican-controlled Legislature said they passed the law to improve safety in Jackson, which has had more than 100 homicides for each of the past three years.

The law also expands the patrol territory of the state-run Capitol Police department within Jackson. The NAACP says in its lawsuit that the police expansion also violates the Constitution's guarantee of equal protection by treating Jackson differently from other parts of the state.

While the Justice Department challenges the appointment of prosecutors and judges, it does not challenge the police expansion.

Trying to bring back Jim Crow.

Most African Americans are lovely people.
Most Caucasian Americans are lovely people.

But each group has its distinct (and lovely) culture.

So it makes sense that each group should be policed by its own people.

(Then African American young gentlemen will NO LONGER be brutalized by sadistic Caucasian cops.)

Mississippi's Black community was incensed earlier this week after state lawmakers proposed to create a separate justice system within the city of Jackson that would overrule the majority Black city council and put a large swath of the local justice system completely in the hands of state officials, all of whom are white.

As reported by Mississippi Today, the legislation would allow the state's white chief justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court, its white attorney general, and the white state public safety commissioner to appoint new judges, new prosecutors, new public defenders and new police officers to oversee a new district in the city encompassing all of the city's majority-white neighborhoods, effectively creating a separate justice system for whites in what is statistically considered the Blackest city in America.

And it would do so without any of those officials receiving a single vote of support from any resident from Jackson, 80 percent of whom are Black.
"It reminds me of apartheid," Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba told the website Tuesday.

Newsweek has contacted Lumumba for comment, as well as all three of the bill's principal sponsors, who claimed on the floor of the Mississippi Legislature that the foremost aim of the bill was "public safety" amid concerns of crime rates in Jackson.

However, some legal observers described the effort by the Mississippi Legislature as an attempt by white conservative politicians to erode the Black vote in a way that had not been seen since the Jim Crow era.

This is an example of white supremacy at it's best.

Mississippi is pretty much telling white folks we are bringing back Jim Crow.

Sounds entirely logical.

Yep and I understand that it is Republicans who are trying to bring it back.
When that is a fact and has moved beyond your opinion, please let US know. Factually speaking, Jim Crow is a Democrat legacy. For a party that is all about cleaning up tainted legacies, the Democrat Party ought to rename itself.

Why would the people of Jackson object at all?

Having the state government of Mississippi taking over some of the law enforcement duties in the state capital would save the city's taxpayers money, no?

Is Jackson so flush with money that they can provide this service to the residents? Or is their hope to actually drive out the Honky Minority in Jackson?

It shouldn't have to be like that, but, it's not a bad idea.

Well fool we can see the moves Republicans are making to bring back Jim Crow. Look at what is happening in Mississippi, look at what the Supreme Court just did, there is a bill in the US House to pull funds from any state that gives reparations to black folks, nobody else just black folks.

Damn that is the weakest excuse I have heard on the matter.
