I can't help but wonder how surprising this case was to any white members of society who actually care about equality and justice in our criminal justice system. Because these types of crimes against Black people are of no surprise to any of us. In fact this was standard fare during Jim Crow BECAUSE U.S. law designated Black Americans as lesser than white Americans by their enforcement of the "separate but equal" doctrine. White racists focused on the 'separate' part, while no one gave any thought to the 'equal' part although it's understandable that many, or even most, figured it was thrown in there as a necessity in order for the doctrine to pass constitutional muster.

And when the law is unequal you can't really be surprised when people conduct their lives attempting to enforce said inequality, even when it's not their place to do so.

But that was then, this is now, right?

Once caught, the Goon Squad had the Book thrown at them.

But why was the complaint of the two black victims ignored for so long?
An Officer “accidentally” shot a suspect in the mouth?
Why did the Goon Squad operate so freely and openly?
Why didn’t other Deputies report what was going on?

Indeed OP, and the reason so many are upset in this country is that these old racist practices are being summarily stamped out of existence.

Blacks are free to leave Mississippi and the USA at any time they choose.

“The case finally brought national attention to what Rankin County residents say has been decades of abuse perpetrated by patrol officers and detectives in the sheriff's department against poor people, white and Black, in central Mississippi”

Once again, a case of police brutality is exploited by the left to push racial division. These asshole were abusing whites too. You race-baiters are running interference for police brutality by turning these cases in to racially divisive issues.

And the Rankin County Sheriff is still in office after claiming it was a few rogue Deputies that lied to him
How was I to know?

He ignored complaints for years
