Mecca Mall!

Ok everyone let's get down to business and ask the serious question we are all dying to figure out....

Will there be a Victoria's Secret there?

They have malls in Iran too, their still a ways away from letting women drive, vote, or go anywhere by themselves without being harassed.

I can't comment first hand..but a friend of mine went to Tehran a couple of years ago..and said it was surprisingly Western.

But it's probably spotty at best.

My experience in Istanbul was that it was a very modern, almost European city.

Turkey is very westernized, they have night clubs, allow drinking, and you can actually talk to women there without being harassed by Morality police and lashed. They have Air Force Bases in Turkey and the Airmen have a good time for the most part. Iran is not as bad as Saudi Arabia but still you cannot listen to music outside, you cannot drink, certain hair cuts are not allowed and you will be questioned by police if you are seen out with a woman and they will ask you what your relationship is. Iran has a long way to go still.

I would say yes to that question.

I am sure the mall will be divided into a men's only section and a women's only section.

Victoria's Secret would be a very popular store with the ladies. :eusa_angel:

I'll bet...

Well the rightie posters hopped right over the virtues of Capitalism and jumped right into denigration of a religion.

How American of them.:clap2:

Not.
Perhaps now you can explain how that was "denigration".

Really?

Seriously?

You can't be that obtuse.

Or maybe..
Yes, seriously. The only way your silly little victory dance works is if you believe Mohammed would approve of Western commercialism.

Are you prepared to make that case? Note that it would be far easier for you to admit your little gotcha failed.

Your call.

Undoubtedly. In my travels in the Middle East, I've seen many lingerie shops, including VS.

They may cover up head to toe, but they likes their sexy underthings underneath.

Make what case? I am an athetist. My knowledge of most religions doesn't go beyond some cursory reading. And basically..I don't really care all that much.

Time and time again..I see posters proclaiming that some religions take their religious text much to literally. Well. Here is a step in the other direction.

So it's telling that the same actors are basically "at" it again...and instead of praising this move..they turn to make fun of the religion.

Typical.

If you don't know the precepts of the religion, how do you know people are making fun of it? You do nothing but compound your failure.

Mohammed would not approve of Western commercialism. It doesn't take an Islamic scholar to figure that one out, does it?

So, in summary, your gotcha failed. For what it's worth, I agree with you -- the mall is a good thing, and might have a civilizing influence on a backward culture. If you'd let that be your point, I expect you wouldn't have had much disagreement. However, in your haste to condemn "the usual suspects" for something you, by your own admission, aren't qualified to recognize, you merely make yourself look stupid. Good job. :clap2:

Muhammad was for capitalism.

Buy goods and them sell them for a higher price in other cities and lands.

He headed up large caravans of camels across the desert and was was a trader of goods.

He was known to be a fair merchant and always turned a profit for his investors.

That was his first claim to fame in the Arabian Desert.

The concept of the mall is a symbol of Western decadence. Do you think Mohammed would approve of it?

Do you think Jesus would have? After didn't he go after the moneychangers?

Don't change the subject.
