BALTIMORE - The father of a Marine killed in Iraq and whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters from Kansas was ordered to pay the protesters' appeal costs, his lawyers said Monday.

The two-page decision supplied by attorneys for Albert Snyder of York, Pa., offered no details on how the court came to its decision.

On Friday, Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered Snyder to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps. Phelps is the leader of Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church, which conducted protests at Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder's funeral in 2006.

Attorneys also said Snyder is struggling to come up with fees associated with filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court

well this is one of the wtf moments? i dont even have a clue how they found the father responsible for the fees of phelps people but that is what phelps and his followers do...they go into towns and sue the police etc. most of his kids are lawyers....

Westboro Baptist Church pastor and founder Fred Phelps and members of his congregation picketed Matthew's funeral, holding signs expressing anti-gay, anti-American, and anti-Catholic slogans, including "God hates you" and "You're going to hell."

Westboro Baptist Church also posted an essay on its website entitled "The Burden of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew A. Snyder." In the essay, statements indicated that Albert and his wife “raised [Matthew] for the devil,” “RIPPED that body apart and taught Matthew to defy his Creator, to divorce, and to commit adultery,” “taught him how to support the largest pedophile machine in the history of the entire world, the Roman Catholic monstrosity,” and “taught Matthew to be an idolator.”

On June 5, 2006, Snyder filed a lawsuit in federal court in Maryland against Westboro Baptist, Fred Phelps, and anonymous members of the church congregation. The complaint included claims for defamation, two counts of invasion of privacy (intrusion on seclusion and publicity given to private life), and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

The Fourth Circuit is known among lawyers as the most conservative circuit in the country. I'm just relating what we know.

That's not fair to say. Phelps and his ilk DO NOT represent Christians anymore than those nutters in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio that were planning to murder those police officers.

I don't think there are ANY Phelps crew in the Tea Party movement, that is about politics, not religion.

Republican? Phelps is a Democrat.

Phelps is a registered DEMOCRAT. He started his hate filled Church in 1955 and from 1990 to 1998 ran on Democratic tickets for the Democratic Governor --- sometime garnering 30-40 percent of the DEMOCRATIC vote up to 50,000 votes while running ---all while running his hate filled "Church". So this was no secret for Democrats voting for him in the tens of thousands...
