LA to give every student an iPad; $30M order

2 hours ago by Peter Svensson

Los Angeles' school system, the second largest in the United States, is ordering iPads for all its students, handing Apple a major success in its quest to make the tablet computer a replacement for textbooks.

The Los Angeles Board of Education on Tuesday approved the purchase of $30 million worth of iPads as the first part of a multi-year commitment. It found that the iPad was the least expensive option that met its specifications.

The initial order is for more than 31,000 iPads, Apple said. The Los Angeles Unified School District has more than 640,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

This is a really good idea as long as they use them only within the class room year after year.

So what can they do that $200 Android tablets cannot do?

The Asus HD7 would be a brand name with a microSD slot.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to give them all a basic ereader than the most expensive and overpriced hardware sold?

I forgot, we are talking about the government, they don't do good ideas.

oh look, the schools giving children access to porn and on line predators.

and then you get into the whole whine.... im poor and dont have internet at home... pay me more welfare so i can get high speed internet.

And e-reader would be just fine for reading text books.

I paid $225 for my brand new, top of the line iPad. I replaced my Android because the damn this was a piece of junk. I still have a little Acer that travels with us, along with the iPad.

Every kid should have a computer. It should be included in the budget. But, since the Rs don't even want to pay for the most basic stuff, like salaries and decent nutrition ... fat chance they'll vote in favor of computers.

No to iPads, other tablets. Too portable and too easy to steal or sell.

e-readers - dumb. Let the read books.

I agree, every child should have a computer and access to the internet.

A computer that the parents pay for, support, fix when it is broken and replaced when it is stolen or lost. The parents should also pay for the internet access.

Every kid should have a computer? You don't believe that, why say it?

Wow, this is great for all of the LA kids who have decent schools. Everywhere else there seems to be classes being cut from curriculums as well as teachers being fired. It just seems like they should have to share the wealth with the rest so the problems can get sorted out.

So what make and model Android device was it. Android is just the operating system. I agree every kid should have a computer.

An e-reader that will not work as a computer is kind of dumb but an e-book is a book.

At some point shouldn't the parents kick in a little and send their kids to the school prepared.
I see the 30 second spots on MSNBC all the time with the likes of Laurence O'Donnell and he's practically in tears because kids aren't prepared when they show up at school. And another one
with Melissa Harris Perry bitching about the fact that kids are in school hungry and they are not going to do well...

Now is it too much to ask for a kid to show up at school prepared and with at least a pop tart and a glass of milk in their stomach to start the day.

What the fuck!

Parents do not send their children to school with iPads because they don't want their kids beaten up and the iPads stolen.

Liberal logic will dictate that if everyone had 2 IPads there will be no need to steal. And in the event that the program missed 1 kid so he went out and stole one...Well since government provided everyone with 2.... no problemo! :eusa_whistle:

Whatever happened to simply relying on books, paper, pencils, and intellect?

Not using computers would be a demonstration of not using intellect.

Not necessarily. One can be highly intelligent and not use computers. Or, one can be so and choose to use them in varying ways. Conversely, one can be "not intelligent" and use computers as well... psikey.:tongue:
