October 25, 2011 - Opposition To Ohio's SB 5 Grows, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Women, Union Members Push Kasich Deeper In Hole

Ohio voters support 57 - 32 percent the repeal of SB 5, the centerpiece of Gov. John Kasich's legislative program, as the margin against the governor's measure has almost doubled in the last month, from 51 - 38 percent for repeal September 27, a 13-point margin, to a 25-point margin in today's Quinnipiac University poll.

Gov. Kasich's standing is in the same negative neighborhood as SB 5, with Ohio voters disapproving of his job performance 52 - 36 percent, down from 49 - 40 percent disapproval in September's survey by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.

"With two weeks until Election Day, the opponents of SB 5 have strong reason to be optimistic," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "The opponents had seen their 24-point margin in July close over the summer and early autumn. As we enter the home stretch, however, they have once again taken a commanding lead. Except for Republicans, just about every demographic group favors repealing the law."

While Republicans oppose repeal 59 - 32 percent, their votes are buried under by Democrats who support repeal 77 - 13 percent and independent voters who agree 56 - 32 percent. Support for repeal is strong across gender, racial, income and education groups:

• Men, 54 - 38 percent, and women, 58 - 27 percent;
• Those without college degrees, 56 - 30 percent, and those with degrees, 57 - 37 percent;
• Whites, 54 - 35 percent, and blacks, 76 - 15 percent;
• Voters making over $100,000, 52 - 42 percent, those who earn less, 59 - 30 percent;
• Voters in union households, 70 - 24 percent, non-union households, 52 - 35 percent.

Poor, poor, big dumb Kasich..

A no vote on issue 2 is a vote for Teachers, Firefighters, Police and bargaining rights in general.

Kasich is looking a little glum lately.

Kasich Tries to Calm Ohio Unions Pushing Vote on Bargaining Law

Since Ohio Governor John Kasich signed a law restricting government unions similar to one backed by Wisconsin’s Scott Walker, he has spent months trying to avoid a divisive referendum on the measure, using private talks and public pressure.

After Walker braved a Capitol occupation and residents began trying to recall his legislative allies, Kasich supported private discussions with labor leaders in June, said Curt Steiner, a Republican consultant who hosted the talks at his Columbus office. When those proved fruitless, Kasich held news conferences last week urging opponents to consider a compromise taking the issue off the Nov. 8 ballot.

So what happens when Ohio goes bankrupt because it can't afford these lavish union benefits?

In IL, Governor Quinn, who is the lapdog of the Public Sector Unions, has given them everything but the Sudetenland. Taxes have gone up 66% and companies are fleeing in droves.

Oh brother..

EXTREME

How bout ALL them other peons who aren't teachers, firefighters, police WHO don't belong TO A UNION

they must be poor poor DUMB people too..

Everyone and anyone that is in favor of a balanced budget and fiscal responsibility by government, is automatically considered "dumb" by the lib/commie/progressive/socialist crowd. Of course these people are the same pigs that are shitting on wall street....

You know full well how democrats feel about the people.

The people are such POS that they had to form unions to stop the oppression.

The damn people expect me to pay for part of my benefits. No way I am from the party of the free lunch.

Since when did teachers, firefighters, police become ELEVATED as a job that is ABOVE everyday people?

Everyone has to tighten their belts in this economy...but the OTHERS DON'T.

Not at all. I love it when politicians show courage and conviction. When Kasich took over Ohio the budget deficit was $8 billion. He balanced it, without raising taxes. We need more Governors like him.

I really love this. The nutters.....who opportunistically used the images of first responders in music videos and campaign ads for nearly a decade after 9/11..........have done a 180 and now blame them for the nation's ills.

Truly an odd turn of events.

All I can say is libs told us that the voters were for overturning the efforts in Wisconsin to get rid of collective bargaining rights, as well.

They told us the voters were on their side.

Only problem is, they weren't.

All the recalls, and the vote to get rid of a Supreme Court judge blew up in their face. The law stands.

So, shall we see how it turns out in Ohio, before you libs do a dance in the endzone BEFORE the ball gets in there?

I know what the media says about the question in Ohio. I live in Ohio.

I just am incredulous that the voters that swept Kasich into office ON the idea of getting rid of out-of-control government spending are now within one year have all changed their minds.

I know I haven't changed my mind on collective bargaining. One of the reasons I voted for Kasich.

I am going to vote Yes on Issue 2. Let's see if I'm the only Ohioan that will.

So Sarah. Why don't you wait until the actual vote happens before you do that endzone dance.

It wouldn't be the first time that polls say one thing, while the voters say another.

Myths vs. Truth | Building a Better Ohio

MYTH: State Issue 2 eliminates collective bargaining rights for government workers.

TRUTH: Actually, the law hasn't changed. The new law states the same as the old law: "Public employees have the right to… bargain collectively with their public employers to determine wages, hours, terms and conditions of employment." The only difference is that Issue 2 helps to better define what those "terms and conditions" are. Since the old law was passed nearly 30 years ago, government employee unions have successfully expanded the definition to include a laundry list of costly perks and fringe benefits that taxpayers can no longer afford. Senate Bill 5 simply restores the balance between the needs of our government employees and the ability of taxpayers to effectively manage their schools and services.
