‘The Whole World Is Watching’: The 1968 Democratic Convention, 50 Years Later

On Aug. 28, 1968, violent clashes in Chicago between demonstrators and the police produced one of the most polarizing showdowns of the 1960s. People are still debating what it all meant. ‘The Whole World Is Watching’: The 1968 Democratic Convention, 50 Years Later (Published 2018)

We are no strangers to human suffering — to conflict, to natural disasters, to some of the world’s largest and gravest catastrophes. We were there when fighting erupted in Khartoum, Sudan. As bombs rained down on Ukraine. When earthquakes leveled southern Turkey and northern Syria. As the Horn of Africa faced its worst drought in years. The list goes on.

But as the leaders of some of the world’s largest global humanitarian organizations, we have seen nothing like the siege of Gaza. In the more than two months since the horrifying attack on Israel that killed more than 1,200 people and resulted in some 240 abductions, about 18,000 Gazans — including more than 7,500 children — have been killed, according to the Gazan health ministry. More children have been reported killed in this conflict than in all major global conflicts combined last year.

The atrocities committed by Hamas on Oct. 7 were unconscionable and depraved, and the taking and holding of hostages is abhorrent. The calls for their release are urgent and justified. But the right to self-defense does not and cannot require unleashing this humanitarian nightmare on millions of civilians. It is not a path to accountability, healing or peace. In no other war we can think of in this century have civilians been so trapped, without any avenue or option to escape to save themselves and their children.

Let me know when Gazans pick up some weapons and start shooting back....until then ....sing along

Gazans had their two state solution and what did they do with it? They elected Hamas then they built hundreds of miles of military tunnels and stockpiles of rockets and grenade launchers.

Such is life.

Wrong. Aug 6, 1945 and Aug 9, 1945. Hiroshima, Japan was decimated by an atomic bomb that killed between 90K and 145K people--mostly civilians. Three days later, another atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan killed between 60K and 80K people, mostly civilians. I think you better dry behind your ears or research your posts before showing everyone what an ignorant ass you are.

Time will tell but right now Israel needs to eliminate Hamas. They are certainly losing the global narrative which is what Hamas wants. It is one issue for the corrupt UN and their donor nations to be clearly biased, they have their own agenda, but it is quite another issue for objective, peaceful humanitarian groups to go on media and talk about their dead volunteers or the fact they can't help certain areas of people who are dying of thirst or hunger. This is also dragging the U.S into the same group since it vetoed the ceasefire. This is why Israel is going full on out, the U.S.must be pressuring them. I'm not sure this improves the safety of civilians tbh as more mistakes occur under time constraints.

Israel is getting full support from countries that know what Hamas and Gazans did on Oct 7. Sometimes retribution is totally justified.

As soon as all of you come forward with an alternate solution that allows Israel to kill the demons hiding with those civilians in front of them, perhaps Israel will listen. The truth is simple. Hamas created that infrastructure specifially so they would be protected by Israel's dilemma. Kill civilians to get to the demons or don't fight back at all. 10/7 was a paradigm changer. Fock what the world wants unless they are willing to help Israel destroy this scourge on humanity. Until then, their wailing and their demands sound like Hamas propaganda.

Wrong.

Sorry, moron, you're wrong again. This century includes every day since December 12, 1923. If you meant anything else, you should have used the term "last 23+ years" Doesn't have nearly the shock value does it? MSM tactics. SMH.
"Aug 6, 1945 and Aug 9, 1945. Hiroshima, Japan was decimated by an atomic bomb that killed between 90K and 145K people--mostly civilians. Three days later, another atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan"

The 20th century began on 1 January 1901 (MCMI), and ended on 31 December 2000 (MM).

21st century 1 January 2001 and will end on 31 December 2100.

Some people just seem intent on attacking anyone that doesn't follow some narrative. But Dante knows he is not alone attempting to formulate arguments on what he sees going on.

quotes:
Israel was justified in hitting back at Hamas for breaking the cease-fire that existed on Oct. 7 and indiscriminately murdering, raping or maiming more than 1,200 people and kidnapping some 240 others in its path that day. Hamas plotted and executed a campaign of unspeakable barbarism that seemed designed to make Israel crazy and lash out without thinking about the morning after the morning after. And that is just what Israel did.

But nine weeks later, we can now see the morning after the morning after. In pursuing its aims of dismantling Hamas’s military machine and wiping out its top leaders, Israel has killed and wounded thousands of innocent Gazan civilians. Hamas knew this would happen and did not care a whit. Israel must. It will inherit responsibility for a gigantic humanitarian disaster that will require a global coalition years to fix and manage. As The Times reported on Tuesday, “Satellite imagery shows that the fighting has resulted in heavy damage to almost every corner of Gaza City” — at least 6,000 buildings hammered, with about a third of them in ruins.
