Is austerity a good idea now? Only if you're blind...

If a household is spending more than it can afford then should it get an extra line of credit or should it cut spending?

Why is the government any different?

Cut spending. Live within your means. Stop buying things just because you want them. Save for a 'rainy day'.
The problem with the federal government is it can print new currency which devalues the Dollar. It is also why the US Dollar is at or near 30 year lows vs major currencies.

Sure, let's do what Greece and Spain have done. Austerity measures prevent growth.
Sarkozy is being thrown out for his austerity.

Bullshit. Austerity measures prevent governments from going into crushing debt.
Now stop playing stupid. The reason why these countries cannot continue to fund socialism is because THERE IS NO MORE MONEY. Get it?!!!
The Euros have taxed everyone and everything in sight and have taxed things that seemingly do not exist and still these countries cannot fund their social safety nets. Safety nets are no longer sustainable.
No country can continue to pay half of it's population in pension and benefits when that half is no longer producing anything. It is impossible.
Those European nation's economies suck because of the EU has too many debtor members.
Business cannot expand because taxation to pay for socialism is confiscatory. Without expansion of business, the economy suffers.

The only way middle class people are able to increase their wealth is with credit.

Pretending its not true is fucking stupid

If the right had any honesty they would be telling their kids to only pay cash for evertything.

Save the full amount for a house and never take on a home loan.

Never enter into a car loan.

Nobody has said anything about individuals.

If someone in the middle class finances regular stadium seating season tickets for a football, basketball, and baseball....that would be stupid.

If they funded season tickets in a skybox...that would be really stupid.

Investing in something like a home is a totally different story.

Right now the U.S. is funding regular seating and paying skybox prices. We are not getting anything for our money.

That is stupid.

The analogy does not carry over.

That is THE TOPPER of all stupid statements. You've outdone yourself.
Going into debt, especially revolving credit debt DOES NOT create wealth. It creates....more debt. In fact revolving credit is the worst kind of debt because it feeds upon itself.
No surprise here. You and the other big government stooges believe government can create economic growth by creating more debt. Not possible.

The difference is, if you pay for housing, you are paying rent or paying on a mortgage. You pay for bus fare or buy a car.

Austerity is buying a Lexus when you can't afford a Volt.

Spain just started implementing austerity measures. Literally just started when the centre right government was voted it after years of socialist rule.

And they are doing it in the kindest way possible.

Mariano Rajoy’s centre-right government did not raise value added tax or reduce unemployment benefits, and left public pensions untouched, arguing that this would risk strangling consumption as the Spanish economy lurches into its second recession of the crisis. State-sector salaries, however, are to be frozen.

“Our first objective is to achieve healthy public finances, but not at any price,” said Soraya Sáenz de Santamaria, deputy prime minister. “We have to support those who are in most need, and not slow down the necessary recovery”.

And Greece had no alternative. If they were to receive international bail out money they had to finally get their house in order.

And again they just started these measures this year.

This argument that austerity hasn't worked is bogus, because the austerity measures have just been voted on this year.

So it's bullshit all the way over "austerity measures" because we are talking Spain passing the measures in January and in February Greece 2012.

Now to Sarkozy, he's losing for multiple reasons but the number one reason is the right wing siphoned off mega votes.

He's been nicknamed "Little Napoleon" for being so involved in toppling leaders in the middle east while France crumbles at home.

As well he is facing huge corruption allegations. He's probably toast. but this has very little to do with austerity measures.

Financing a house or car utilizing credit with the capacity to pay interest and principle is along way away from austerity agendas adopted by European countries. The focal issue is and will always be living within ones means. The sovereign debt issue (sustainability) facing the european community is a long way away from being resolved, Germany holds all the cards, if they demand cuts, cuts will be made regardles of who runs the government. When you look at America we are not that far behind, do the math.

how many Americans would own a house or car without credit?

Really?!!! Who the fuck has $30k for a car or $150k and up for house in cash laying around?
Cut the bullshit.
It is idiotic posts such as your latest that say "try another hobby, TM"...
You are a blithering idiot. If I were ( God forbid) a liberal, I certainly would not want to be represented by the likes of you.
Dammit you are stupid..

That is just stupid. Favorable credit terms allow the buyer a low cost loan PLUS keep cash on hand for a rainy day.
If you had any brains ,you would not post such tripe.
You know as much about financial matters as the stupid little dog in your avatar.
