If The Senate shuts this down....

THOUGHTS FROM AN INDEPENDENT

It's crystal clear that Senators Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham are eager to sweep this Senate impeachment trial under the rug, shut it down, and allow no new evidence or witnesses. But what happens if they try to do that? Will other Republican Senators march in lockstep, and try to deal with the coming election fallout in November? Will they break ranks and join the Democrats in insisting documents and witnesses being suppressed by President Trump be revealed? Recent polling shows:

71% of Democrats, 56% of Independents and 40% of Republicans say Senate should call additional witnesses to testify.

51% say Senate should remove Trump from office.

Either way, Senate Republicans are in a tough spot. Do they cave in to public opinion and hold a fair trial? or do they cave in to Donald Trump and risk being removed from office in November?

JMHO - Too close to call right now.

Independents see the impeachment as nothing but a partisan dog and pony show. The House party line vote proves it 100% conclusively.

Democrats were talking bout impeaching Trump before he took office. Actually before he was elected. Even before he clinched the Republican nomination.

You Democrats are not fooling anybody.

How is calling witnesses fair? The House did not call these people, so why should the Senate? You numbers are indicative of the poor education these people received. Most of them probably don't vote.
Lies.

The house did call these people. tRump obstructed.

No...he cited executive privilidge as is his Right and the democrat refused to go to court to test it......that's on them...they had control, they decided not to call these people
No. He declared he had "absolute immunity", which isn't a thing.

Lie, and no matter how many times you are fed that lie nor how badly you need to believe it executive privilege is not obstruction.
I like to believe that most Americans agree that this should at least look like justice has been served. The form of the trial leaves senators plenty of time to examine their life choices that led to this sorry situation where conservative lawyers will be arguing that abuse of power and obstruction are not impeachable offenses. It's anyone's guess if it will goad any of them to honor their oaths.
Like Creepitus you believe in the fairy tales that performing the duties of his office or being a "poopy-head" are impeachable offenses.

MCCONNELL: “If the existing case is strong, there’s no need for the judge and the jury to reopen the investigation. If the existing case is weak, House Democrats should not have impeached in the first place..."

Dems have been trying to make their case for years yet obviously even they are aware that the House's case is weak.

Parnas value is not ascertained. I have never trusted Russians and their many links to this Putin puppet in the White House. I have personally met a Russian traitor, while on active duty. I thought he was scum, not to be trusted, even if he was now supposed to be our scum, or maybe because he was now supposed to be our scum. As you might guess, we didn't shake hands.

But Parnas is not a Russian.
He's Ukrainian!!!
How did you treat them? Shoot 'em?
Never met one or visited that beak away republic from the old Soviet. Pretty sure he speaks fluent Russian. Equally sure, GRU plain clothed personnel are plentiful throughout that trouble country. One of it's many problems, but typical of old Soviet Spetznaz tactics, I've studied.

Most Russians are loyal to Mother Russia.
Ukrainians sell themselves out to the highest bidder.
They've worked at one time in history for Russian Czars; and at another time for Adolph Hitler.
Last time I checked, Ukrainians are sort of split right now.

You make Ukrainians sound like some of the unnamed, yet paid posters on this message board. Ukrainians will have to sort it out, or fall back in-line under the new Soviet, as it continues to try to take back the breakaways. I wish the Ukrainians good luck in their resistance. They are the 2nd largest geographic nation over there with 2nd largest military and back right up to NATO. Can't imagine why Russia is interested in them, can you?

Unfortunately republicans will march lock step with trump and mcconnell.

The last thing republicans want is for the whole truth to be shown to the American public.

This trial will be nothing but a joke. It will further divide our nation and do a lot of harm.

I sure hope that we have an honest and fair election in November. If we do, the republicans will not have much of a chance for reelection. Which is one of the reasons why mcconnell and the rest of the republicans are doing all they can to prevent the whole truth from being shown to the American public.
the democrats do a lot of lock stepping too....and the house "trial" was a joke too.....and like the house trial did not divide this nation and do it harm....wake up dana, quit walking lock step with your party....

The republican party will be fine if they reinvent themselves into something that serves the people better. There is a definite place in American politics for conservatism, it's just kind of sick with plutocracy and racism right now.

Yep, the Republican Party is the cause of all these problems below and must reverse course immediately.

Younger and Minority Workers Lead Wage Gains as Expansion Ages
Oct. 17, 2019, 8:59 AM

A tightening labor market with U.S. unemployment rate at a 50-year low is starting to result in higher wages for full-time workers, including younger people and minorities whose pay has lagged.

Median weekly earnings for Americans in the third quarter rose 3.6% to $919, outpacing inflation, the U.S. Labor Department reported Wednesday. Earnings for those aged 25 to 54, in their prime working years, rose by 5%, the fastest rate of growth in recent years.

Record-low black unemployment cheered by black activists

“Love him or hate him, this is an incredible economic accomplishment for the President and a tremendous benefit for American blacks,” said Project 21 member Derryck Green.

Along with a reported third straight month of 3.7 percent overall unemployment, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) August jobs report noted that the overall black unemployment rate fell half-a-percent to 5.5 percent. This is the lowest black unemployment rate ever recorded. BLS began reporting employment statistics by race in 1972. And with overall white unemployment at 3.4 percent, it is also the smallest reported gap between the races ever in terms of joblessness. Until recently, the racial employment disparity between blacks and whites has generally held to a 2-1 margin.

America Created 266,000 Jobs in November
JOHN CARNEY 6 Dec 2019

The imaginary recession of 2019 is over.

The U.S. economy added 266,000 jobs for the month and the unemployment rate fell to 3.5 percent, matching the lowest level in 50 years.

Economists had expected the economy to add 180,000 jobs and for unemployment to remain unchanged at 3.6 percent, according to Econoday.

Adding to the picture of strength for the labor market, previous jobs numbers were revised up. September’s figure was revised up by 13,000 to 193,000. October was revised up by 28,000 to 156,000. Together, that adds 41,000 more jobs than previously reported.

[...]

Average hourly wages are up 3.14 percent compared with last year, above economist expectations. In manufacturing, the average workweek increased by 0.1 hour to 40.5 hours. Average hourly ages of private-sector production and nonsupervisory employees rose by 7 cents in the month to $23.83, a 0.22 percent gain.

The November hiring surge pushed incomes for Americans higher last month.

Incomes rose by half a percentage point in November, above economists’ forecasts and much better than the soft readings in September and October. This was the strongest gain since July, according to data from the Commerce Department on Friday.

Consumer spending rose at a 0.4 percent annual rate last month, led by a jump in spending on big-ticket durable goods like autos and appliances.

The higher spending is not due to rising prices. Inflation, as measured by the Federal Reserve’s preferred price indicator, is still running well below the Fed’s 2 percent target. It came in at just 1.5 percent for November compared with a year ago.

And despite the rise in consumer spending, Americans are saving more. The saving rate edged up to 7.9 percent of after-tax income in November.

Manufacturing Surveys Indicate Growth Returning to U.S. Factories
JOHN CARNEY

The U.S. manufacturing sector appears to be regaining its footing, suggesting the beaten-down sector may once again be expanding.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s survey-based index of manufacturing activity soared to 17 in January, up from the weak 0.3 reading in December and well-above forecasts for a reading of 3.0.

Merry Christmas: Retail Sales Grew at Healthy Pace in December
16 Jan 2020

Retail sales rose at a healthy pace in December, a sign that a very healthy U.S. labor market and consumer optimism is continuing to support economic growth.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that retail sales–which measures sales at stores, online, and in restaurants–increased a seasonally adjusted three-tenths of a percentage point in December compared with November to $529.6 billion. That was in line with the consensus forecast.

US-China phase 1 trade deal: Beijing agrees to buy $200 billion in US products
By Michelle Toh, CNN Business
11 hrs ago [Jan 16. 2020]

China has agreed to buy hundreds of billions of dollars worth of products from the United States as part of their "phase one" trade deal.

The agreement signed Wednesday will have Beijing purchase an additional $200 billion of US goods and services over the next two years.

The increase in purchases will be compared to 2017, before the trade war started. China imported over $185 billion in total US goods and services that year.

In exchange, Washington has agreed to reduce tariffs on $120 billion in Chinese products from 15% to 7.5%.

Taken together, the phased purchases by China would result in a dramatic surge in US exports. Total exports to China would increase to over $260 billion in 2020, and roughly $310 billion in 2021 if the deal holds

We don't care. Just end this fiasco.

For what? They will just start another one. And they will continue to hound Trump until his last day in office. Hopefully, they lose the House and we pickup more seats in the Senate. That would shut them up for Trump's second term.
Trump's second term is all gravy. He should just give it back totally. Nothing to lose. Many of these men and women have very little concern about the citizens. Its more about the party and agendas. And we see it in all the colors.

I'm sure that will take place if we also dominate the House as well. Trump winning is a shoe-in. That's what Democrats fear the most. So our real focus should be on the House. Piglosi will not only be the first female SOH, but one that lost her position twice in her career.

No offense Ray, but I think the real focus should be on the Senate, so they can keep on filling those federal judge positions and also the president's cabinet. Not to mention another Supreme Court replacement or 2. Maybe 3?

Gee, wouldn't that be great. A Plutocracy of old white men.

Executive privilege excludes covering crimes.
No crime has been proven or even alleged and the House has the same remedy to confront WH executive privilege that the Senate does ... the courts. Impeachment is not a sledgehammer to be used as a hyper-partisan tool of first resort.

The FFs wanted impeachment to be used only in the most dire circumstances and as recently as March, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi admitted impeachment must be "compelling and overwhelmingly bipartisan." She said removing President Donald Trump is "just not worth it."

Have you seen even a smidge of bipartisanship?

You mean like the partisan hit job by the House?
Sucks for Trump all he has in defense is to attack the process like some obviously guilty Mob boss. He is counting entirely on every republican putting him before the party and the country,
Ironic, since you are posting in a thread started on the premise of attacking the process.
I took the OP to be speculation on the open question of how many republican senators will just go along with trying to sweep it all under the rug in spite of the damage it will do to the republican party. The political calculations being done by republicans right now must be a cause of great torment to them. They earned this mess by telling the president he had their unconditional support no matter what.
Not like Dems haven't been squirming since Trump won.
This whole affair is in hopes that they can either force Trump out or create enough dislike to make their candidate look better.

To tell the truth I hope that Trump wins a second term, the house and senate go to the Republicans with enough of a lean that no matter what is proposed the Dems don't have enough to shut it down.

Then just for giggles I would love the house to propose to exhonerarte his impeachment just I could watch Pelosi have a stroke.
We already know republicans want a permanent one-party state and an absolute plutocratic ruler.
yea like the democrats dont want one party rule...
