How the World Can End Tomorrow

West coast faults drop, irritating the Yellowstone caldera.

Or yeah, a big asteroid. :114:

The Chicxulub impactor had an estimated diameter of 11–81 kilometres (6.8–50.3 mi), and delivered an estimated energy of 21–921 billion Hiroshima A-bombs (between and joules, or 1.3–58 yottajoules

58 yottajoules!

That's a yotta joules!

The OP is ridiculous. I would say these people believe anything the media tells them.

For one, we would know if a large asteroid was on a collision course. We would have time to do something to throw it off course. If that wasn't possible, a few of us can escape to a space station.

Manned flight hasn't left LEO for 50 years. We don't have vehicles ready with anywhere near the capability to significantly deflect a small asteroid, let alone a large one.

As for a space station, the record for manned space flight is 438 days, in a space station continually re-supplied from Earth.
It would take The Earth hundreds to thousands of years to recover from an extinction level event.

It has been calculated that to repopulate The Earth with a stable human gene pool would require a minimum population of 50,000 humans. The largest space station ever built to date can support six people for a short time. They are built to support a crew of three in the long term.

Let's face it ... if a large asteroid is headed for The Earth, as it has many times before in our History, we, as a species, are well and truly boned.

On the plus side, the planet will just reboot, and start again, just as it has many times before.

This is due to the stupidity of NASA because they have been wasting our money on AGW and trying to find aliens. For pete's sake why?

Instead of trying to colonize space and the moon, Obama re-directed NASA for Mars. It wasn't to colonize Mars, but find aliens.

Now, we got Trump in charge and finally he wants us to orbit the moon in a manned vehicle. It means trying to colonize the moon as best we can. It means that we can be multi-planetary.

It seems odd that in a “perfectly tuned universe” we would need to be concerned with an asteroid impact.

Never heard Obama mention aliens, did you? The moon is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

Now that Trump is in charge, the directive has changed.

We aren't going to live on the moon. No water duh. We want to see if we can live in a space station orbiting the moon. We can shuttle people, water, and supplies to the space station and then to the moon.

Do you think being multi-planetary is a good idea or is finding aliens more important to you?.

Actually, water on the moon was first discovered in 1976, in the form of ice in the regolith. Recent studies show that, in the polar regions of the moon, the amount of sub-surface ice could be quite significant.

So you don't think looking for signs of life on other planets or moons is a worthwhile part of exploration?

We can barely live in Earth orbit do you really think it would be easier in moon orbit? Shuttling people, water, and supplies to the space station and then to the moon is the wrong direction. The moon might be useful as a source of raw materials.

We are a long, long way from having self-sustaining colonies on the moon or other planets. They would require steady resupply from Earth.

I'm going to assume I won this exchange because you cannot express a simple opinion of being multi-planetary or finding aliens. We can just toss the fear of an asteroid collision into the refuse bin.

Trump is the greatest president ever because he's undoing what Obama did. Maybe we can send Obama to see if humans can live on Mars haha.

It's a start to becomng multi-planetary which makes more sense than trying to find aliens or evidence of past alien life. People are willing to pay big bucks to spend time at a luxury space station in outer space. Why not shuttle them to the moon, too?

It's not really liquid water is it? There's the rub. How can we use this ice? Do you think we can live on the moon?

I think its a great idea. I just don't think it is a plan to save us from an asteroid hitting Earth.

The moon is not a planet and living there would be only a little different from living in space.

If we ever want to be multi-planetary we'll need to explore other planets first and finding if they have life is important info.

You may think your Bible protects you from asteroids, I don't.
