I get asked a lot by my stepfather the very same question, "Why do you support this guy?" I've thought about it, and my answer is, "I just like him."

Maybe it's my age, or my flighty political ideals. I don't know. I see a guy who is doing his best, who loves his family and I see a guy young enough to consider new ways of doing things.

He hasn't done these "new" things as well as I hoped, but that's politics. These guys always let us down, because our expectations, I think, are greater than the possible outcomes.

But, honestly, I just favor him. As opposed to Bush, whom I detested with a passion. But now, I see that my disapproval was always placed on him, and not the surrounding circumstances or his Congress. Nearly thoughout every year of his presidency, I tended to criticize THAT man. And I'm not proud that I was so judgemental.

Funny note: I used to say, that a blind deaf mute would be better than "W". Now I hear the same things said about a president I like. It makes me wonder, maybe we are all wrong.

My final answer to my stepdad was this, "Look, you liked a president and defended him, for eight solid years, and I had to listen to you. Now your crew has the shitty end of the stick, and it sucks. You'll have to listen to me until you get it back, the not so shitty end."

It's not eloquent, I'll grant you. It's not how I think political strategy should be, but I think that's how it is. I could be wrong, I don't deny that.

Deep down, I think we all want the same basic things. But we all have distinct ideas about how to achieve them. The guy that is doing it the way we prefer (or closest to), is the guy that we support. That's the beauty of democracy, at least in theory.
